Mets head out on pivotal road trip after 11-17 August ends with sloppy series against Marlins
SUMMARY: The New York Mets ended August with 177 runs and 53 homers, both franchise records for any month. They also went 11-17, committed 16 errors and won just seven games not started by rookie pitchers who began the month in the minors. The Mets dropped three of four to the Marlins over the weekend, erasing any momentum they created with a rousing three-game sweep of the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the week. New York is four games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for the final National League wild card heading into its penultimate road trip of the season — a 10-game trek against a trio of contenders.

SUMMARY: Sandy Alcantara pitched seven strong innings, Agustín Ramírez hit a two-run homer and the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 5-1 in a game that got testy. The scrappy Marlins took three of four from New York after losing their previous seven series. New York leads Cincinnati by four games in the race for the last National League wild card. Alcantara allowed four hits and struck out six. He plunked Mark Vientos with a pitch in the seventh. Alcantara and Vientos stared each other down before the benches and bullpens emptied, though no punches were thrown as players milled around the mound.

AP Top 25 poll preview: Defending national champion Buckeyes are poised to return to No. 1
SUMMARY: As wrestling great Ric Flair famously said, to be the man, you gotta beat the man. Defending national champion Ohio State is still the man in college football. The purveyors of preseason rankings had anointed Texas because of what in retrospect was an overabundance of unjustified hype surrounding Arch Manning. Reality hit at the Horseshoe on Saturday, and now the Buckeyes are poised to jump Penn State and return to No. 1 when The Associated Press’ first regular-season Top 25 drops Tuesday. Look for No. 9 LSU to garner support for No. 1 after its 17-10 win over No. 4 Clemson.
