Abrego Garcia's lawyers ask judge to fine Trump administration for contempt
SUMMARY: Lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia have asked a federal judge in Maryland to impose fines and other sanctions against the Trump administration. They're arguing that it flagrantly ignored court orders for several weeks to return him to the U.S. from El Salvador. Abrego Garcia’s attorneys say the administration claimed to be powerless to retrieve him. And yet it was secretly building a human smuggling case against him, the lawyers said. The government returned Abrego Garcia last week to face those charges. The U.S. says the lawsuit over his deportation should be dismissed because it followed the court's order to bring him back.

Officers sue to compel Congress to install a Jan. 6 riot memorial at Capitol
SUMMARY: Two of the police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol from a mob of Trump supporters have filed a lawsuit to compel Congress to follow one of its own laws and install a memorial to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. In Thursday's lawsuit, the officers claim the failure to install the memorial plaque on the Capitol reflects an effort by President Donald Trump and his congressional allies to rewrite the history of the Jan. 6 riot. More than 100 law enforcement officers were injured in the attack. Hundreds of people were convicted of Capitol riot-related crimes, but Trump erased all of the cases in a sweeping act of clemency.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia pleads not guilty to human smuggling charges in Tennessee federal court
SUMMARY: Kilmar Abrego Garcia has pleaded not guilty to human smuggling charges in federal court in Tennessee. Abrego Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador who had been living in Maryland before he was wrongfully deported in March. Abrego Garcia's case has become a rallying point for opposition to President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda. Abrego Garcia was returned to the U.S. last week but immediately taken into custody on criminal charges. Prosecutors have accused Abrego Garcia of being a dangerous member of the notorious MS-13 gang, but his attorneys have called the charges against him “preposterous.” Abrego Garcia was arraigned Friday.

Is air travel safe? Deadly Air India plane crash renews concerns after a string of other crashes
SUMMARY: The Air India plane crash that killed at least 240 people is just the latest aviation disaster this year. Officials have tried to reassure travelers that flying remains the safest mode of transportation, and statistics support that. But the steady stream of headlines about things going wrong on planes and helicopters is unnerving. There have been at least seven fatal plane crashes in the U.S. since January. And one of the worst aviation disasters in South Korea history happened in December when a plane skidded off a runway into a concrete fence and killed 179 people. Another plane flipped over on landing in Toronto, but everyone survived.

Trump moves to merge wildland firefighting into single force, despite ex-officials warning of chaos
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has told government agencies to consolidate their wildland firefighting into a single program. Thursday's executive order comes after former federal officials warned that such a consolidation could be costly and increase the risk of catastrophic blazes. The move is meant to centralize duties now split among five agencies and two Cabinet departments. Officials have not disclosed how much the change could cost. The Trump administration in its first months sharply reduced the ranks of firefighters through layoffs and retirement offers. The personnel declines and reshuffling of agencies come as global warming makes fires more severe and destructive.

Detained Columbia protester asks judge to order his release, says government missed appeal deadline
SUMMARY: Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil have asked a federal judge to order the release of the Columbia University protester from an immigration lockup, saying the Trump administration missed an appeal deadline. In a letter Friday to U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz in New Jersey, the lawyers say Khalil has satisfied all of the court’s requirements to go free and that the government's lawyers missed a Friday morning deadline to challenge Farbiarz's order Wednesday to release Khalil. They also say the government hasn't shown any other grounds for Khalil's continued detainment other than the reasons Farbiarz has already dismissed. In response, the judge gave the government until 1:30 p.m. Friday to formally reply to the latest request to free Khalil.

4 detainees have escaped from an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, DHS says
SUMMARY: According to the Department of Homeland Security, authorities are looking for four detainees who escaped from an immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. An email statement says more “law enforcement partners” have been brought in to find the detainees missing from Delaney Hall. Newark’s mayor had cited reports of a possible uprising and escape after disorder broke out at the facility Thursday night, and protesters outside the center had locked arms and pushed against barricades as vehicles passed through gates. Much is still unclear about what unfolded there.

Trump’s deployment of troops to LA protest divides US governors
SUMMARY: California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called President Donald Trump's military intervention in Los Angeles an assault on democracy. Meanwhile in Texas, the GOP governor is putting the National Guard on standby in places where protests are planned over the weekend. The divergent approaches show how the two parties are trying to navigate national politics and the role of executive power. Democratic governors have signed a joint statement criticizing Trump's move to activate troops in California and some blasted it to a House committee.

What to know about 'No Kings' protests against Trump's policies
SUMMARY: Opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration are set to rally in nearly 2,000 cities and towns this weekend. The No Kings Day of Defiance protests will happen during the military parade in Washington on Saturday for the Army’s 250th anniversary — which coincides with Trump’s birthday. Earlier this spring, Trump announced his intention to transform the Army celebration into a massive military parade, complete with 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through the city streets. Organizers say the mass protest will reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of the nation's democracy.

The reverence for Old Glory that inspired Flag Day arose decades after Betsy Ross sewed her first
SUMMARY: The reverence for Old Glory that inspired Flag Day came decades after the lifetime of the woman often credited with sewing the first United States national flag. Betsy Ross may have been puzzled by the annual celebrations each year on June 14. The reverence is a product of the Civil War when the Union army used flags to show soldiers how they should move on the battlefield. The men performed fatal heroics to keep the flags aloft. A 1949 federal law designated Flag Day to honor the date in 1777 on which the Continental Congress approved the first national flag design. But local observances started as early as 1885.

Finding a strong candidate for governor in Pennsylvania may help GOP protect its US House majority
SUMMARY: Job No. 1 for Republicans in Pennsylvania is to scrounge up a candidate to contest next year’s reelection bid by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, if only to aid other Republicans on the ballot. That’s because a lopsided Shapiro victory could doom the GOP’s narrow majority in the U.S. House that backs President Donald Trump’s agenda. Democrats are targeting four GOP-held congressional seats in Pennsylvania. That's more than in any other state and one more than the three seats they need to retake the majority. Analysts say a valuable standard-bearer is important. That's the candidate who delivers the party’s message and drives the enthusiasm of the party’s faithful voters.

Chen (1985 at Oakland Hills), Shaun Micheel (2010 at Pebble Beach) and Nick Watney (2012 at Olympic) as the only players to make an albatross at the U.S. Open since the event started keeping such records in 1983..

Scottie Scheffler has frustrating day at the US Open to fall 7 shots off the pace
SUMMARY: Scottie Scheffler has some work to do to get into contention at the U.S. Open. The reigning PGA champion shot a 3-over 73 in the opening round at Oakmont. That left him in a tie for 49th, seven shots behind leader J.J. Spaun. Scheffler says he made some “sloppy” mistakes that cost him during a round that matched his worst-ever start in a major. The 28-year-old says he just needs to clean things up to put himself in position for the weekend.

After 2 straight missed cuts in majors, Brooks Koepka is in early contention at Oakmont
SUMMARY: Another round like this, and Brooks Koepka should be back for the weekend in a major. After missing the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship, Koepka shot a 2-under 68 in the first round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont. That left him in a tie for third, two strokes behind leader J.J. Spaun. Koepka made a 42-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 fourth. After falling back to even par, he finished with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.

US Open players get that sinking feeling, straight down into the rough at brutal Oakmont
SUMMARY: All across Oakmont, there were plenty of tales from the rough. The U.S. Open came to what might be its toughest venue and players faced difficult lies in the 5-inch rough and lots of chances to hack and pray. Handling it best was J.J. Spaun, who chipped in for birdie from the rough to open his day. He shot a 4-under 66 to lead after the first round.

Full-time dentist, part-time amateur Matt Vogt's US Open homecoming ends with a kick in the teeth
SUMMARY: Part-time amateur and full-time dentist Matt Vogt's fairy tale homecoming at the U.S. Open ran into reality during the first round at Oakmont. The 34-year-old Pittsburgh-area player who caddied at the course as a teenager had the honor of hitting the tournament's opening tee shot. It sailed left into the ninth fairway. While Vogt recovered to save par, there were plenty of bogeys the rest of the way. Vogt said at some point it felt like his “head was spinning.” Vogt spent some time at the practice range afterward hoping to find better form ahead of the second round.

A golf course with a 6-lane highway? Welcome to the US Open at Oakmont, where I-76 somehow blends in
SUMMARY: From an overhead view, the sight is somewhat jarring. The Pennsylvania Turnpike essentially cuts Oakmont's golf course in half. At ground level, though, the highway is surprisingly unintrusive at this week's U.S. Open. In fact, it can't be seen from much of Oakmont’s layout. The biggest reason the roadway blends in when you’re on the course is because there’s an elevation change down to the highway. So the Turnpike presents largely as a gap in the middle of the course. That's if it’s perceptible at all.

J.J. Spaun leads U.S. Open at Oakmont on a wild day of great shots and shockers
SUMMARY: J.J. Spaun is the U.S. Open leader at Oakmont after a relatively calm day compared with everyone else. Spaun played bogey-free for a 66 that matches the lowest opening round for a U.S. Open at Oakmont. He leads by one over Thriston Lawrence. Brooks Koepka is back in the major mix with a 68. So is Jon Rahm at 69. They were among 10 players to break par, so Oakmont was plenty tough. Scottie Scheffler made five bogeys in his round of 73. Rory McIlroy shot a 41 on his second nine and shot 74. Oakmont was as tough as advertised.
