She was born in Cambridge, on April 12, 1917, to the late Edward and Gracie Smith, being the last surviving child of nine.
She received her education in the Dorchester County Public Schools and held employment with Phillips Packing Co., Hanover Foods and Coastal Foods. In 1937, she was joined in marriage to the late Alonza M. Jones Sr.
Martha joined St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a faithful member serving diligently on various committees until her health failed. She became a member of the Usher Board, Communion Stewards, United Methodist Women, MYF Counselor, Willing Workers Club, Goodwill Club, Jr. Ushers Coordinator and the Finance Committee.
She was like a mother to many, opening her home to those in need offering food and guidance.
She is survived by a son, Alonzo Jones Jr. (Baldy); three daughters, Gloria Jones Wongus, Veronica Jones (Tootsie), all of Cambridge, and Agnes Jones Seymore (Tyrone), of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Bertie Wongus of Cambridge; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Delancy Young of Baltimore; several nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives and friends; five special nieces, Elois Wright, Brenda Jews, Stephanie Brown, Paulette Brown and Sandra Ennels; and two special friends, the Rev. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Delores Jones; a son-in-law, James Wongus; and a stepson, Charles Wongus Sr.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at St. Luke UM Church, 712 Bradley Ave., Cambridge. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery.
