Martha Evans, 85

CAMBRIDGE - Martha Jane Sanders Evans, died at home on Independence Day, Friday, July 4, 2009. She was 85. Born Nov. 20, 1923 in Madison, she was the daughter of the late Ira Dail Sanders and Louise Bromwell Sanders. Mrs. Evans was educated in Dorchester county schools and was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1941. On April 18, 1953 she married Leslie W. Evans. He died on Sept. 16, 1983. Mrs. Evans was a devoted member of Joppa United Methodist Church in Madison. Mrs. Evans worked for the Selective Service Commission during World War II for three years. Her entire working career was as a legal secretary having been employed mostly by Harrington and Merryweather Law Firm for several years. Mrs. Evans enjoyed traveling on extensive bus trips. She had visited Canada, New England, The Gulf Coast and various places of interest within the Southern United States. Her greatest enjoyment was being with her son, sisters and her sisters' families. She also greatly treasured her times spent with friends. Preceding her in death and sorely missed, besides her parents and husband, were her five sisters, Addie White, Irene North and her husband Perry, Caroline Howard and her husband G. Edwin Howard Sr., Mary Sanders, and Mabel Sanders; and niece-in-law, Laura B. Howard. Surviving is her son, James Stephen Evans of Cambridge; brother-in-law, Edward James White Sr. of Cambridge; four nephews, G. Edwin Howard Jr. and his wife Irene, Keith S. Howard and his wife Karla, Robert C. Howard, all of the Neck District, Cambridge, and Edward James White Jr. of Cambridge; a niece, Frances Ann Collins and her husband Tom of Cambridge; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 8 at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. Gravesides services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9 at Cambridge Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Robert Kirkley.
