EAST NEW MARKET - (Maude) Marie B. Conaway, 76, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pa.

Marie was born June 8, 1931, daughter of Maude M. and Benjamin O. Brown, the youngest of eight. She attended the Dorchester County Public Schools and earned her GED and her Practical Nursing License in Pennsylvania.

In 1948, Marie married Martin L. Conaway Sr. and they raised two children in Philadelphia, Pa., Martin Jr. (deceased) and Rose Marie.

There she worked as a power machine operator, money examiner for the United States Mint, and a mail sorter for the US Postal Service. She later cared for Carolyn "Carrie" Kogan for five years. She then fulfilled her lifelong dream and graduated from James Martin School of Nursing. She received her practical nursing license on her 50th birthday. She was a nurse at InglisHouse of Philadelphia for 12 years and retired to her home in East New Market. She then continued nursing parttime for a couple of years in Cambridge.

For almost 40 years she was Women's Sunday School Teacher at the 3rd Eternal Baptist of Philadelphia. She sang with the Faith Singers, attended Bible Study, invested time with Crossroads Missionary Baptist of Philadelphia, Deliverance Evangelistic Church of Philadelphia, led Women's Bible Studies.

After retirement she served Faith Community United Methodist Church of East New Market, as president of the New Hope Choir, member of the United Methodist Women, a Communion Stewart, Team Leader of the Prayer Ministry, a nurse for the Colgate Children's Summer program and served on the East New Market Heritage Committee.

She is survived by her daughter, Rose M. Gray and son in-law, Floyd; a granddaughter, Dionne M. Garner (Dwayne); a grandson, Gary V. Gray (Tajmia); a great-grandson, Jordan M. Gray; her sister, Pauline Sampson; a brother, Daniel Brown (Betty) and many -nieces, nephews, cousins and -friends.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Martin Layfield Conaway; a sister, Earlene; brothers, Coldridge, Leonard, Walter and Edward, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Faith Community United Methodist Church, East New Market. Burial will follow in the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.

The family will receive friends Sunday 6-8 pm at the church.

The Henry Funeral Home, PA in Cambridge is handling the arrangements.
