Major E. "Jimmy" Hurley Jr.
SALISBURY - Major E. "Jimmy" Hurley Jr., 74 of East New Market, passed away on Saturday May 17, 2008 at the Coastal Hospice on the Lake in Salisbury. He was born in Cambridge on October 8, 1933 and was a son of the late Major Edward Hurley Sr. and Pearl Henry Hurley.
Jimmy attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1951. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 10, 1951 and served on the Destroyer USS Meredith until his honorable discharge was granted on August 4, 1954. On February 15, 1957 he married the former Beverly Moore. Jimmy worked at Cambridge Wire Cloth for 39 years until he retired in 1996. After retirement Jimmy and his wife moved to West Palm Beach, Fla. where he worked in his daughter and son-in-law's restaurant. Jim and Bev decided to move back to Maryland in 2001. He was a lifetime member and Past Commander at Dorchester Post No. 91 American Legion and was always very active in Legion baseball. He was the oldest living member of the American Legion State Baseball Commission. Jimmy was a member of the Tin Can Sailors, an organization for sailors who had served on destroyers, as well as many other organizations including the Rescue Fire Co. Inc. For many years he had been actively involved in fund raising for a number of organizations. He was an avid sports enthusiast, in particular Navy football and Washington Redskins football. Some years ago Jimmy had served as a city commissioner for the City of Cambridge. Jimmy had been in failing health for the past two months and was in hospice care while living at home. Last Monday he was admitted to Hospice on the Lake in Salisbury where he passed away Saturday morning.
Survivors include his wife Beverly M. Hurley of East New Market, one daughter Lisa Hurley Coren of West Palm Beach, Fla., two sons Mike Adams and his wife Cheryl of East New Market, Timothy Hurley of East New Market, five grandchildren, Elizabeth Fink, John Adams, Logan Fox, Rebecca Adams, and Alex Coren, five great grandchildren, a sister Dorothy Lee Barrow and her husband Dorsey Barrow of East New Market, sister-in-law Audrey Taylor and her husband Curtis Taylor of Seaford, Del., sister-in-law Janet Moore of Federalsburg, several cousins and numerous friends.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock with Donald Knauer officiating.
