WORTON - Lula Olivia Murray Washington was born on January 16, 1917 in Salem, Maryland to the late George and Vera Hopkins Murray. She was the seventh child born in a family of twelve. On Monday morning, November 17, 2014 she departed this life peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving daughter, Lauretta Freeman and caregiver, Davett Smith. She received her early education at Salem Elementary School and Frederick Douglas St. Clair High School in Dorchester County, Md. When her daughter, Lauretta, graduated from High school, Lula moved to Philadelphia, Pa. where she lived for many years. During these years, she attended the Philadelphia School of Nursing and graduated as a nurse and worked for many years at Bryn Mawr Nursing Home in Bryn Mawr, Pa. She also was a nursing companion to many families. Lula received her early religious background at Mt. Pleasant Church in Salem, Maryland. She was also a member of St. Johns A.M.E. Church of Wayne, Pa., serving faithfully for many years. Having met Lloyd U. Washington, they became good friends and later were married for many years. They lived in Haverford, Pa. and later moved to Worton to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Lula joined Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church in Worton and was a member of the Stewardess Board and the Ada Butler Missionary Society. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Lloyd Ulysses Washington; seven sisters, Villa Jackson Ethel Burroughs, Mary Louise Murray, Lena Larkin, Esther Tilghman, Thelma Cornish and Vera Brockman; four brothers, Isidore, Floyd, Hayward and George Murray. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Bruce Efrem Freeman; son-in-law, Grover Cleveland Freeman; nephew/brother, Harvey Eugene Murray and great-grandson-in-law, Ebbin Dula. Lula leaves fond memories to be cherished by her loved ones; daughter, Lauretta Freeman; grandsons, Myron (Melessa) and Sobeye (Michelle) Freeman; great-grandsons, Daraun and Aleq Freeman; great-granddaughter, Rayneesha Dula; great-great-grandchildren, Royce, Eyan, Emmarie and Erianna Dula; honorary and loving nieces and nephew, Bernadette, Ethel and Efrem Murray; three sisters-in-law, Mildred, Edith and Betty Murray; two brothers-in-law, Grant Tilghman and Gregory Brockman; several loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; especially one who called her every day, Josephine Phillips. She had devoted and loving caregivers, Davett Smith, Felicia and Steve Caulk. She loved her pet grandson, Mickey Washington-Freeman. Even as her health started to fail she refused to complain. A funeral service was held Monday, November 24, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, Butlertown, Maryland. Arrangements were entrusted to Bennie Smith Funeral Home – Chestertown.
