DOVER - Lucia Marie Abate passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.
She was born February 24, 1960, in Greensburg, PA, to the late Francis John Abate and Rosemarie Rizzo, and grew up in Silver Spring, MD, before moving to Dover in 1992.
Lucia, or “Miss Lucy,” left a lifelong impression on the lives of all of those she encountered, none more than her loving husband of 38 years, Larry McGreevy of Dover, DE.
A multi-talented woman, she was the president of several flower shops that she and Larry owned; She also worked in wedding & banquet management at Columbia C.C. Even during the time she spent as a stay-at-home mom, she volunteered at W. Riley Brown Elementary, eventually rising to become a teacher’s aid, and later, a paraprofessional. Lucia loved to garden, and enjoyed crafting so much that she got a job at Michael’s as a Night Manager.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her niece, Jessica Marie Abate.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children, Maximilian McGreevy of Jacksonville, FL, Rosemarie McGreevy of Los Angeles, CA, and Lucia McGreevy of Raleigh, NC; her two siblings, Peter Abate (Regina) of Wilmington, NC, and Christina Kane (Jason) of Greenwood, DE; her four nieces Christa Abate, Elena Abate, Regina Abate, and Sierra Kane; as well as the “found family” that Lucia considered her own, including the Baker family, Durk family, Schmidt family, Upp family, and the Brauer family.
She was a beacon of light and love that provided a safe space for all. Lucia encouraged everyone she knew to pursue their dreams, take care of each other, and have love for everyone.
Memorial services were held Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the American Lung Association.
