CRISFIELD — Three young men from Somerset County are heading to Nepal on a mission to hike the Himalayan Mountains, visiting and ministering to the tribal people living there.

Jacob Layfield of Westover and Richard Lee Thomas of Crisfield, both 19, and 16-year-old Luke Willing of Marion Station are joining team leader Mike Sloan, team member Brad Mayer and native of Nepal named Babhu who will serve as their interpreter, on a 200-mile trek to villages where people have never seen anyone from outside their culture.

The excursion will take place April 20 through May 14.

The three young men will first travel to Thailand where they will attend an international youth conference in Bangkok. They will then meet up with the rest of the team to fly into Nepal and start their hike on foot.

They will carry their personal belongings and a couple of musical instruments they are purchasing when they first arrive for their music ministry, of which they will “gift” to a village before they leave for home.

Jacob and Richard worked this past summer at the Denali Zipline Tours in Talkeetna, Alaska, where they met Mr. Sloan, who has led two to three teams the last few years through the Himalayas. The teens came home fired up to make this there next adventure.

The trio has taken on fundraisers, held performances, and each is willing to work for his ticket and expenses for the trip, which airfare alone is significant. Their stint selling the County Times on Charlie’s Corner the last day of 2014 raised them over $275 between sales and tips.
