John Woodland Haxter

CRISFIELD - John Woodland Haxter died Saturday, March 15, 2014 at McCready Memorial Hospital. Born in Crisfield on Aug. 20, 1923, he was a son of the late Peter and Charlotte Anne Tawes Haxter. A graduate of Crisfield High School class of 1941, he US Navy retired, serving 20 years. Following his retirement from the US Navy, he worked 18 years as a quality control inspector for the US Postal Service in Norfolk. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Pocomoke City, and the Stanley Cochrane American Legion Post #16 in Crisfield. A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bertha Julia Vilius Haxter of Crisfield; five children, Brenda Phillips and David Haxter, both of Chesapeake, Va., Ronald Haxter of Virginia Beach, Va., Kevin Haxter of Machipongo, Va., and Michael Haxter of Fenwick Island, Del.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield. Interment was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
