CHESTERTOWN - Jean Turner Eyler, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
Jean T. Eyler was born March 13, 1929 in Chestertown, the daughter of the late Frank Catlin Turner and Nannie Judefind Turner.
Mrs. Eyler was a 1946 graduate of Chestertown High School. She attended Washington College for two years and was a 1952 graduate of the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing. She then married Robert F. Hansen, a graduate of the Naval Academy, in Chestertown at Christ United Methodist Church.
With the military life came much traveling, living in eight states and two foreign countries, the Philippines and Japan. Mrs. Eyler worked as a registered nurse for Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Easton Memorial Hospital and as a nurse in Pensicola, Fla. She also worked for Kent Hospice, as a nurses aide at Magnolia Hall and as a teachers aide in Kennedyville School. She volunteered for the Special Olympics and attended church at Christ United Methodist Church in Chestertown.
Her interests included bird and squirrel watching, crocheting, crossword puzzles, reading, playing scrabble, writing letters, crab feasts, Gregory Peck movies, listening to Tom Jones, Kenny Rogers, Andy Williams and Nat King Cole. She loved to go camping with her family, traveling and taking care of her two cats, Buddy and Izzy. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was also a member of the Rock Hall garden club.
She is survived by four children, Patricia Hansen Chance and husband, Gerald of Galena, John Brett Hansen and wife, Irene of Cambridge, Barbara Hansen Marshall and husband, Kenny of Cambridge, Robert Brooke Eyler of Chestertown, and eight grandchildren, Katheryn Chance, Amanda Hansen, Erica Hansen, Catherine Hansen, Scott Marshall, Kyle Marshall, Nick Marshall and Kimberly Skye Eyler.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Cmdr. Robert Frederick Hansen; one daughter, Nancy Christine Hansen and one sister, Anne Turner Landry.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Chester Cemetery in Chestertown. In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to Kent Hospice Foundation, 100 Brown St., Chestertown, MD 21620; Really Great Cats Rescue, 5959 Lawton Ave., Rock Hall, MD. 21661; Meals on Wheels, 200 Schauber Road, Chestertown, MD; or the charity of your choice.
