SNUG HARBOR - Janis E. Werner, died July 25, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born December 24, 1946 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late John G. 'Dude' and Hazel A. Wheatley. After graduating from Overlea High School in 1964, she worked for C&P Telephone and the Army Records Repository and the Office of Naval Intelligence at Fort Holabird in Dundalk. She married Stanley J. Werner in 1967 and became a full time homemaker. In 1975, Mrs. Werner started classes at Essex Community College graduating with an Associate's Degree in Nursing in 1980. The family moved to Snug Harbor in 1979 and she began her nursing career at Dorchester General Hospital in 1980. The last eleven years of her employment was with the practice of Dr. Edmund MacLaughlin in Cambridge, retiring in 2011. In 1987, she became a certified EMT and joined the Secretary Volunteer Fire Company, serving as ambulance captain and vice president during her thirteen years of service. Mrs. Werner is survived by her husband of forty five years, Stanley J. Werner; her daughter, Sandra Russum and husband Dennis, of Hudson; her son, Matthew Werner and wife Amy, of Woolford; four granddaughters, Jennifer Russum, Lindsey Long, Taylor Werner and Madison Werner; great-granddaughter, Camryn Russum; her brother Douglas and wife Theresa, of San Marcos, Texas; sister-in-law, Suzanne Wheatley; and twelve nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Diane M. Marsh; and brother, Kenneth W. Wheatley. At her request Mrs. Werner was cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2012, at BPO Elks Lodge #1272 in Cambridge. Interment will be at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Secretary VFC, P.O. Box 56, Secretary, MD 21664 or to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
