CAMBRIDGE - James L. Howard, 89, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007 at his residence.
He was born in Cambridge on Jan. 24, 1918, and was a son of the late Philip C. and Ola Shenton Howard.
Mr. Howard graduated from Cambridge High School. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
On Dec. 7, 1947, he married Mary G. Flowers who passed away on Dec. 1, 1985.
Mr. Howard had worked for several businesses, Phillips Hardware, Elwood Pliescott and with the state of Maryland in the Income Tax Department in Annapolis until he retired in 1981.
Some of his hobbies were reading, he was an avid chess player and loved woodworking. He had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1954.
He is survived by a nephew, Herbert D. "Sonny" Dorman III and wife, Jane of Cambridge and their children, Tim Dorman of Baltimore and Nikki Dorman of Cambridge; four sisters, Anita Howard Simmons of Oxnard, Calif., Gertrude VanSickle of Santa, Calif., Ruth Ann Hughes of Iva, S.C., Marie Blakeman of Cambridge; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Howard was preceded in death by a brother, Philip C. Howard Jr. and two sisters, Elizabeth Lewis and Phyllis Faulkner.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, at Dorchester Memorial Park with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
