CAMBRIDGE - James Johnson Phillips Jr., 59, passed away at his home on Friday, Sept. 14, 2007. He had been in failing health since March of 2007.

He was born in Cambridge on Oct. 15, 1947 and was a son of the late James Johnson and Barbara Ann Creighton Phillips Sr.

Jim attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1966. On April 24, 1981 he was married to the former Mildred Dodson.

He worked at Cambridge Wire Cloth for 27 years and in 1994 he went to work for Airpax. He was a member of St. Paul"s United Methodist Church and had been attending the First Baptist Church in Cambridge.

He was an exempt member of Rescue Fire Co. where he had served as an active member for 27 years and had been a truck captain and lieutenant on the hose company for a number of years.

Jim enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing and crabbing. Jim also enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family and his work.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred D. Phillips of Cambridge; two stepchildren, Patrick T. Harding of Cambridge and Jeffrey T. Harding and his wife, R. Renee Harding, also of Cambridge; three stepgrandchildren, Jamie Lee Harding who Jim had raised as a daughter, Jeffrey T. Harding Jr. and Jessica L. Harding. He is also survived by a brother, Gary C. Phillips and his wife, Linda H. Phillips of Linkwood and one niece, Lisa Phillips and a nephew, Gary C. Phillips Jr. and his dog, Boots.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Betty Brohawn Phillips.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Randall T. Blackmon and the Rev. Jerry Wade officiating. Members of Rescue Fire Co. Inc. will participate in the service. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Calvin Stack, Bill Tyndall, George Phillips, Bob Windsor, Frank Horseman and Tom Robbins. Honorary bearers will be Tony Mineri, Lee Cooper, Bobby Aaron, Ricky George, Willis Bell, Jeff Hurley and Ronnie Johnson
