CAMBRIDGE -- Isabel B. Simmons, 97, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2007 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.
She was born in Cambridge on April 22, 1909 and was a daughter of the late John Frederick and Addie Hall Barton.
She attended the National Cathedral School in Washington. After graduating from school she moved back to Cambridge and has been a resident of Cambridge ever since.
On Feb. 16, 1933 she was married to John Frederick Simmons, M.D. Dr. Simmons passed away on July 13, 1992. Mrs. Simmons was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge where she had served on the Altar Guild as Vice President for many years. She was also the first Corresponding Secretary for the Cambridge Woman"s Club in 1936 and 1937.
Mrs. Simmons had the pleasure of writing the letter to invite Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt to Cambridge for the dedication of the original Choptank River Bridge.
Mrs. Simmons had been in failing health for several years.
Survivors include three daughters: Maria S. Shields and her husband, William Shields of Greenbelt, Katherine S. Potter of Cambridge and Isabel S. Brannock and her husband, Benjamin Brannock of East New Market; one son, John F. Simmons Jr. and his wife, Edith Simmons of Lynchburg, Va. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Michael Potter, Patrick Potter, Steven Potter, Anne Dunn, Theresa Farnell, Laura Eckel, Kimberly Ingo, Karen Hahn and John F. Simmons III; 22 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Fredrericka B. Rosemere and three infant great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church on High Street in Cambridge with the Rev. Michael D. Reddig and the Rev. Mark Farnell officiating. Burial will follow in Christ Episcopal Churchyard.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613.
Pallbearers will be John F. Simmons III, Benjamin H. Brannock, Scott Eckel, Darius Riley, William Shields and Walt Dunn Jr.
Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
