Ida Gwendolyn Adkins

PARSONSBURG - Ida Gwendolyn "Gwen" Adkins died Monday, July 30, 2018, at Coastal Hospice At The Lake. Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Fred B. Adkins and Ruby Adkins.
A graduate of Wicomico High School, she attended nursing school in Wilmington and served as a nurse at Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury and a Veterans Administration hospital in Washington, D.C. She enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where she achieved rank as a Major and serviced active duty in Japan. After returning from her two years active duty, she resided in Washington, where she completed four additional years with the Air Force as a Reserve. After fully retiring from private nursing, she moved back to Salisbury, where she was an active member in the MarZion Homemaker's Club. She was a member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church and in her childhood and younger years attended Zion Methodist Church.
She is survived by two brothers, Fred B. Adkins and Josephus W. Adkins; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline A. Wood.
A funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Interment was at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.
