HURRICANE DORIAN UPDATE #1

Posted

The City of Crisfield has been notified by the Somerset County Department of Emergency Services that we can expect moderate street flooding from a combination of high tides and high winds resulting from Hurricane Dorian as it passes by the mid-Atlantic region. Areas that normally experience street flooding on routine storms will see a greater volume of water covering your streets and properties. The flooding is expected to occur during the Friday and Saturday tide cycles.

Accordingly, the City of Crisfield has taken the following steps to prepare for the storm:

The parking lot at Carvel Hall will be available for public parking for those needing to move their personal vehicles to high ground. The gate will be open on Thursday, September 5th, at 12 noon and will remain open until the last car has been removed. Please park only where indicated, do not block other vehicles and understand that this service is being offered at your own risk.

Sand and sand bags will be made available in limited numbers for the protection of commercial buildings and residential structures. Empty sand bags may be collected at City Hall, 319 West Main Street, by 9 am Thursday, September 5th. Initially, we will provide up to 5 bags to a location as long as quantities last. If more are needed, we will do our best to accommodate you. Sand, free to the public, will be available outside Carvel Hall by noon Thursday, September 5th. Please take only as much as you need and be considerate of your neighbors.

Streets subject to heavy flooding will be closed to through-traffic upon the judgment of the Crisfield Police Department & Public Works. SPEEDING THROUGH FLOODED STREETS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED AS THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO HOMES AND BUSINESSES ALIKE. THE POLICE HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO ENFORCE THIS DIRECTIVE VIGOROUSLY. Please be careful and respect those around you. As always, we hope and pray that God gives us His protection and care as we face whatever comes our way. We join in prayer with our neighbors across the world for those suffering death and destruction already caused by Hurricane Dorian and other disasters, both natural and man-made. If you have any questions about this Hurricane Update #1, please don’t hesitate to call City Hall at 410-968-1333. Thank you and God Bless You.
