Historic house tour in Somerset County features several sites dating to 1776 and older

PRINCESS ANNE — The Somerset County Historical Society celebrates America’s upcoming 250th anniversary with a special Holiday Historic House Tour.

Twelve historic sites — including nine built prior to 1776 and three shortly after — will be open to visitors Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Six private homes, three churches and three public sites will be decorated for the season. All are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and some have either not been open before or were last on tour many years ago.

Among the highlights is Harrington, a circa 1750 home owned for the last 40 years by Regina Bell. The interior is fitted with finely crafted Georgian paneling, exposed beams, raised panel wainscoting and beautiful fireplaces flanked by fluted pilasters.

This year is more of a country tour than a town tour, with properties like Harrington on Polk’s Road joined with others like William’s Conquest in Marion, Kingston Hall in Westover, The Reward near Shelltown, and the mid-18th century Waddy House in East Princess Anne, which was moved in 2018 from its original location to the other side of Perryhawkin Road.

And of course, “No Somerset tour would be complete without a visit to Teackle Mansion, which will also be decorated for the holidays,” an event spokesperson said.

Tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased at Somerset Choice Station Antiques, 11731 Somerset Avenue, or online with a $3.52 service charge added. Proceeds from the event benefit the Somerset County Historical Society and help fund preservation efforts and education programs.

To make it a weekend of history and holiday cheer visitors are encouraged to spend the night in Princess Anne downtown at the Washington Hotel or at The Henson at UMES so the next day they can take a short drive to Salisbury to enjoy the Holiday House Tour of Newtown Historic District on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This tour features 10 historic houses, several churches, and the Poplar Hill Mansion decorated for the holidays. Tickets are $20 in advance via Eventbrite or $25 on the day of the tour with cash at Poplar Hill Mansion (117 Elizabeth Street) or Trinity Methodist Church (112 High Street). The self-guided walking tour is expected to take 2.5 to 4 hours to complete.
