ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s football team has much bigger problems than a clock controversy. For starters, the Wolverines host No. 11 Oklahoma on Saturday. The dramatic ending to the formerly 16th-ranked Wolverines’ 13-12 win over Western Michigan — with a disputed second on the clock that gave Bryce Underwood another chance to complete a Hail Mary — has been one of the most talked about topics in sports for nearly a week. The unlikely ending has overshadowed how poorly Michigan played in all three phases during coach Kyle Whittingham’s debut with college football’s winningest program.
DETROIT (AP) — More than a dozen former hockey players are suing the University of Michigan. They say their coach and other staff were aware of sexual hazing that included the forced shaving of their genitals and other abuses by teammates decades ago. The plaintiffs are 16 men who played at Michigan between 1984 and 2001. The lawsuit apparently grew out of conversations among several former teammates in 2024. The university says the allegations are “disturbing,” but denies responsibility. The lawsuit says Red Berenson was aware of the abuse and did not intervene. He was the coach from 1984 to 2017. Berenson says no one complained to him.
UNDATED (AP) — The second full week of the college football season has many more attractive matchups involving Big Ten teams. No. 1 Ohio State heads to No. 4 Texas and Michigan hosts No. 11 Oklahoma in the two most prominent games. Ohio State is attempting to beat Texas for a third consecutive season. Michigan has a point to prove after falling out of the Top 25 in the wake of its controversial 13-12 season-opening victory over Western Michigan. Some other notable games have No. 21 Iowa hosting Iowa State and Illinois hosting defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Duke.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Across a history of college football that dates to the 1800s, Texas and Ohio State have rarely met on the field. The Buckeyes and Longhorns are making a habit of it of late, however, with big games and big stakes. Top-ranked Ohio State and No. 4 Texas play for the third consecutive season Saturday night in Austin in the blockbuster matchup of the early schedule. The duel between national championship contenders features a pair of Heisman Trophy hopefuls in Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning and Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin.
UNDATED (AP) — Indiana running backs Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe Jr. started fast in Week 1. Richard scored twice, Beebe set up another with a 67-yard return on the opening kickoff and had a 43-yarder scoring run erased by a holding penalty. It’s just a start. After watching North Texas play keep away from the Hoosiers offense last week, Richard and Beebe hope to prove No. 5 Indiana can flip the script Saturday and control the ball when they host Football Championship Subdivision foe Howard.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten is expanding its plan to offer enhanced replay review insight during its football broadcasts. That expanded replay review coverage takes effect this week and will include live audio between the game referee and replay official during reviews, alongside video of the game footage they’re viewing. There also will be a view inside the Big Ten replay center. The Big Ten had announced last week it would offer these enhanced replay reviews during Friday night telecasts. The plan now will cover all conference games as well as home nonconference matchups that have Big Ten officiating crews.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — No. 6 Oregon and Oklahoma State meet Saturday with something to prove after disappointing season openers. The Ducks dropped four spots in the AP Top 25 after struggling to put away Boise State while the favored Cowboys never got on track in a loss to Tulsa. When the teams played last season, Moore threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns, and the Ducks rolled up 631 yards of offense in a 69-3 rout. Oklahoma State fired Mike Gundy two weeks later. A streak of 30 consecutive wins in home openers is on the line for OSU.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota’s matchup against Mississippi State marks the first time facing a Southeastern Conference opponent in a regular season game since 1959. The schedule rarity carries a welcomed test before Big Ten play for the Gophers and a national telecast on CBS to showcase their rising star quarterback. Drake Lindsey set the program freshman record with eight wins last season. He grew up hoping to play for Arkansas at his native state's flagship school. Lindsey experienced significant growth over the spring and summer in several areas. He got off to a good start in a 59-7 opening win over Eastern Illinois.
