Helen Tyler Wallace
Helen Tyler Wallace, 90, passed away Monday, April 14, 2008 as a result of a cardiovascular illness at the Hospice of the Chesapeake.
Born on Hooper's Island in Dorchester County to the late Mildred Flowers and Herman Tyler, Helen traveled the Eastern U.S. seaboard prior to WW II with her mother, sisters and stepfather, Wilbur Flowers, a Captain with the Merchant and Miner Steamship Line. As a young woman, she developed a strong interest in women's fashions and became well known for her personal style.
After marriage to "Wash" Wallace on March 1, 1940, they lived in Prince Frederick where he was employed by the electric company. He joined the Free Masons and became Worshipful Master of the lodge there. Helen joined the Eastern Star at that time and maintained a lifelong membership of more than 50 years. When David and Priscilla were young, the family moved back to Cambridge. Helen's strong faith, love of people and her social involvement will be remembered by many. She was active in the Grace Methodist Church. She also had a successful business selling Beauty Counselor products. Years later when her husband was transferred to Salisbury, she became a licensed real estate agent. They were also residents of Cambridge, Princess Anne, and Crisfield, MD.
Helen was an avid dancer and enjoyed dance clubs in Salisbury and in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she owned a winter residence. She returned to Maryland in April 2004. Helen lived her life through rose colored glasses and found the positive in everything and everybody she met.
Her husband, Charles W. Wallace and their daughter Priscilla Wallace preceded her in death, as did her sister Doris Dayton. She is survived by her son and his wife, David and Diane Wallace of Annapolis, who have cared for her in recent years. Other surviving family members include granddaughters Susannah Horrom; Allison Bucchere and great granddaughter Madeline; granddaughter Jennifer Popken and great granddaughter Penelope. She is also survived by her sister, Anna Flowers Brotemarkle.
