Hazel Slaughter

Hazel Slaughter, 88

EASTON - Hazel Slaughter, 88, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the Berlin Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.

Born in St. Michaels on Jan. 16, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Florence Skinner Caldwell.

Mrs. Slaughter was raised in Talbot County and graduated from the Cordova High School. After the passing of her first husband, Taylor Messix, she attended cosmetology school in Baltimore. She settled in Easton and went to work at the Hair House where she worked until she retired in 1995 with over 35 years of service to her customers.

She was a member of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton and she would also volunteer often at the St. Mark's Thrift Shop.

Mrs. Slaughter is survived by one daughter, Theresa Johnson and her husband, Ross of Selbyville, Del.; one foster daughter, Ginny Boyle and her husband, Mark of Centreville; two sisters, Doris Newell of Baltimore and Florence Horney of Easton. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Hollie Ellerbusch of Annapolis, Erik Ellerbusch of Cambridge, Kodie and Trey Johnson of Selbyville and one foster granddaughter, Amy Williamson of Federalsburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Florence Caldwell, who passed away in February 1995.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Rev. Gary Moore of St. Mark's UM church officiating. Burial will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Hillsboro.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory in care of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Road, Easton, Md 21601.
