EAST NEW MARKET - Harvey J. "Set" Era, Sr., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge. Born October 20, 1918, he was the son of the late Joseph George Era, Sr. and Elizabeth Agnes Whitely Era. Mr. Era served in the US Army during WWII and was assigned to the Provisional Task Force. He was then transferred overseas and stationed in France and Germany. While in Germany, he participated in all engagements assigned to his platoon with "outstanding skill, courage and aggressiveness" and "his valor and coolness under fire have won him the respect of every man in his platoon" and was awarded a Bronze Star. In his younger years, he worked on the family farm and then spent the rest of his working years as waterman. In the summer months, he also painted houses in the community. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Secretary where he served as a Eucharistic minister from December 31, 1987 until his health failed. He was also a member of Hurlock American Legion Post #243, Cambridge VFW Post 7460. He is survived by his wife, Alva J. Collins Era, whom he married in 1952; two sons, James Michael Era and his wife Terri of East New Market and Harvey J. Era, Jr. and his wife Brenda of East New Market; two daughters, Linda Cox and her husband Lt. Col. (Ret) Donald "Bud" of Church Hill and Debbie Mills and her husband Jay of East New Market; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers; William "Mutt" Era, Sr., Joseph Era, Jr., Thomas "Tinker" Era, Phillip "Dillie" Era, George "Pete" Era, and Emil Era; four sisters, Helen Tobat, Stella Era, Anna Wanex, and Mary Mears. The family received friends on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market where a rosary service was held at 7 p.m.. Mass Of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Rev. Michael Casari was the celebrant. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Paul Era, Ryan Mills, William Era, Stephen Era, Donald Cox III and Christopher Cox served as pallbearers.
