OAK HILL, Fla. - Harold W. Lord, 84, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at his home in Oak Hill, Fla. A memorial service was held in Oak Hill on Saturday, June 6. He was the son of Charles W. and Harriet F. Lord. A native of Cambridge, Mr. Lord graduated from Cambridge High School. His great desire to fly led him to hitchhike everyday, after school, to the Webb Airport in Easton. Learning to fly as a teenager, his experience qualified him to become a member of the Civil Air Patrol, in which he served during World War II. After the war, his devotion to flight continued, and from 1956 to 1960 he operated an airplane repair service at Kissimmee Airport, Florida. Later Mr. Lord was employed by the National Air and Space program at Cape Canaveral, Fla. He was involved in many aspects of the space program and received numerous honors and citations from NASA. After retirement he joined a private firm, responsible for the development, improvement and safety of space suits used by the astronauts at NASA. His responsibilities carried him throughout the United States and Europe. He is survived by two sons, Scott of Oak Hill, Fla., and Roger of Wilmington, N.C.; and by a sister, Helen Lord Davis of Cambridge. Mr. Lord is also survived by a niece, Bonnie Wootten McCall and nephews, Kenneth Lord and Stephen Davis, all of Cambridge and Robert B. Davis Jr. of Willards. Preceding him in death, besides his parents, were sisters, Katherine and Laura and brothers Kenneth, William, Charles and (Spike) Marlin. Memorial offerings may be made to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
