Gladys Lenora Johnson, 81
CAMBRIDGE - Gladys Lenora Johnson, of Cambridge, departed this life on Saturday, April 11, 2009, in the Chesapeake Woods Nursing Center in Cambridge surround by her love ones. She was 81. A beautiful, soft spoken wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Gladys was born in Cambridge on July 26, 1927, daughter of the late Viola James and that late Edward Major Sr. Gladys was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County and proudly graduated from F.D. St. Clair High School in 1944. In 1957, she married the late Thomas E. Johnson (Mo Jo) and from this union, three children were born, Jacalyn, Jonathan and Thomas Cornell. For many years, she was employed at Coastal Foods in Cambridge. Later, she worked in the nutrition department at Dorchester General Hospital, from which she retired after many years of service. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and instilled in her family that "you need God in your life." She was a member of Greater Mt. Olive Full Gospel Baptist Church in Cambridge, where she dutifully served as a missionary. She leaves behind a long legacy to cherish precious memories, two loving and caring daughters, Barbara Jordan (William), New Castle, Del., and Jacalyn Dennard (Leroy), Hebron; two devoted sons, Jonathan (Cambridge) and Thomas Cornell (Delilah), Seaford, Del.; eight grandchildren, Cheron Overby (East Windsor, N.J.), Gregory Stanley (Robin), Macha Woolford and Sharonne Jackson (all of Cambridge), Jacalyn Angelle Stanley (Toledo, Ohio), Cornell Stanley (Salisbury), Duonne Green (Seaford, Del.) and David Green (Nickie), Greenwood, Del.); 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edward Major Jr. (Josie Mae), Reginald Major (Alfreda) and Sylvester Major (Rosalie), all of Cambridge; three sisters, Aretta Pickens (Philadelphia, Pa.), Dollene Brown (George) and Nancy Travers (all of Cambridge); two special cousins, Gloria James (Cambridge) and Edwin James (Marion) Buffalo, N.Y.; and a host of other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church 623 Pine St., Cambridge, with a viewing Friday evening 7 to 9 p.m. at Henry Funeral Home, PA 510 Washington St., Cambridge.
