MARDELA SPRINGS - George Robert Freeman III, of Mardela Springs died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at his home in Mardela Springs.

Born in Philadelphia, on July 20, 1923, he was the son of the late George R. Freeman Jr. and the late Kathryn E. Freeman.

Mr. Freeman was employed by Delmarva Power as a supervisor in the Transportation Department for many years. He retired from Delmarva Power in 1988.

Mr. Freeman served in the U. S. Navy during World War II where he was a motor machinist mate on an LST that landed troops and equipment in the D-Day invasion. Upon his return to Mardela Springs after the war, Mr. Freeman began a long relationship with the Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Department. He was an active member of the Fire Department for 62 years serving in many capacities including president, chief and treasurer. Mr. Freeman was also an active member of the Wicomico County Fire Police Association, where he was a charter member. At the time of Mr. Freeman's death he was the longest serving member of the Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Department. He was a long-time member of the Sharptown Lions Club and an honorary member of the Optimist Club of Salisbury as well as an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mardela Springs.

He is survived by a son, Robert W. Freeman and his wife, Lynda, of Salisbury; a daughter, Debra Freeman and her partner, Tracie Bath, of Silver Spring; a granddaughter, Allyson Minor and her husband, Ryan; a great granddaughter, Reagan Ashley Minor; two sisters, Jane Croswell of Phoenix, MD and Lois Obermire and her husband, Wayne, of Seaford, DE; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Freeman is also survived by many good friends from his various clubs and organizations.

Mr. Freeman was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Norma Lee, who died April 15, 2007. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Hubert William Freeman and a granddaughter, Ashley Carter Phillips.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holloway Funeral Home. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Mardela Memorial Cemetery.
