George Malone LeCompte
CAMBRIDGE - George Malone LeCompte, 62, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at Deer's Head Hospital in Salisbury.
He was born Nov. 7, 1945 in Cambridge, son of the late Louise Nichols Nelson and Walter Ennels and was raised by the late George Albert and Hortense Jolley LeCompte.
Malone attended the public schools of Dorchester County and graduated from Mace's Lane High School in Cambridge, graduating in the top fourth of his class under the academic curriculum in 1963.
At both the elementary and high school levels, he was active in music (holding the first chair position in clarinet). He also was a member of the Future Teachers Of America and the French and Science Clubs. After graduation he enrolled in the RETS Electronics Institute in Baltimore, where he received certification in Electronics Technology.
In 1966, he entered the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (formerly Maryland State College) in Princess Anne, as a Music Major. He graduated in 1970 with a B.A. degree in Music Education (Instrumental/History and Theory Specialist) and minor in French. While in college, he was active in the marching concert and stage/jazz bands.
He served as student assistant for the Department of Music at the College, as well as student band director and assistant band director in the Worcester County School System Summer Instrumental Music programs. He was also a Charter Member of TAU ALPHA UPSILON FRATERNITY, Inc. and first graduate of BETA CHAPTER.
He was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Cambridge, where he was a Minister of Christian Education, An Exhorter, ProTem of the Steward Board, Mentor Advisor, Church Clerk, President of the Lay Organization (for 10 years), Second Vice President for the Baltimore Conference (two terms), Eastern Shore Coordinator of the Conference Male Mentoring Program, member of the Pastor's Aides and Missionary Society, served as an Administrative Assistant for the Church, sang on several choirs and had served as choir director for the youth, young adults and various adult choirs. He also was director of programs (summer, etc.).
He was a member of the NAACP, a member of the original Harriet Tubman Organization, the Concerned Citizens for Sickle Cell Anemia and served as Housing Commissioner for 16 years (13 years as President) for the Cambridge Housing Authority. For 16 years, he was employed by the Chesapeake Center, Inc., Easton, where he served as an educational counselor and residential advisor and also Director of the Summer Youth Education and Enrichment Program Administration Services. Due to health reasons he retired in January, 2006.
He is the 13th child in his family of 13 brothers and sisters.
Mr. LeCompte is survived by four sisters, Fannie Stevens (Villa), Alice Cain, Etta McNamara, Florence Nelson; a brother, Tyrone Chester; a foster sister, Iris Johnson; two sons, Cassal and Bernard Jones; a goddaughter, De'Shon Jenkins; a godson, James Thompson and a number of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings, Emma Keene, Benjamin, Charles, Robert, Joe, Herbert and William Nelson.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, at Bethel AME Church, 623 Pine St., Cambridge, with a viewing two hours prior to the services. Burial will follow in Petersburg Cemetery in Hurlock.
