Denton - Gene Carlyle Spiering went to the Lord Jan. 24, 2015. Born on July 29, 1924, Gene was the son of the late Anton William Spiering and Elisabeth Johanna Schaller Spiering of Greensboro, Md. He graduated from the Greensboro High School. Gene was raised on the family farm in Greensboro, Md. where he developed a passion for farming and working on anything mechanical. Early in his career during WWII, he worked in the shipyard in Wilmington, Del., building landing craft for the Navy. He also worked on Allis-Chalmers tractors, and Studebaker automobiles in Denton Md., and then operated his own tractor repair business for several years. He served in the Army National Guard in the early 1950's. In 1963, he began working for Playtex, at the chemical plant in Cheswold, Del.. He remained with the plant when it was sold to Standard Brands, and finally to Reichold Chemical. He was the last person working in the laboratory in Dover, Del., closing it down in 1992. In the 1960's he started his company, Denton Electro-Magic, selling and servicing steam cleaners, space heaters, and high pressure washers. He ran this business until his death, selling his last machine in Dec. 2014. He had a real compassion for collecting nearly anything antique or mechanical. He was most recently attending the Prospect UMC near Vernon, Del. Gene is survived by his wife of 66 years, Christine Spiering of Denton; his son, Charles W. Spiering and his wife Wanda of Dover Del.; a sister, Betty Mintz of Harrington, Del.; a brother, Anton (Buddy) Spiering of Greensboro; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Hignutt; and three great granddaughters: Shannon, Allison, and Riley. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a son, Christopher J. Spiering, three brothers: David, Donald, and Glen, and two sisters: Margie Brown and Cleo Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31st, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second Street in Denton where friends may call from 10 until 11 before the service. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery, 25865 Meeting House Road, in Denton, Md.
