Free tuition for Somerset grads going to Wor-Wic gets Hogan's OK

PRINCESS ANNE — Legislation that provides free tuition and fees to Somerset County high school students who attend Wor-Wic Community College full-time starting in the fall semester immediately after graduation was signed into law April 3 by Gov. Larry Hogan.

The eligibility is for up to three years, or until the completion of an associate’s degree, whichever comes first.

Students are required to complete a FAFSA federal student financial aid form each year, maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, have full-time credit-hour attendance each semester and not be convicted of a felony. The effective date is July 1 — in time for the Class of 2017 to take advantage of this benefit. Books and materials are excluded.

Somerset County Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Gaddis told the County Commissioners on April 4 that Wor-Wic will be promoting this on its website and in commercials “with some of our kids in it” so the news gets out quickly for seniors heading for graduation in the coming weeks.

“I think that’s a great thing,” Dr. Gaddis said, and it will “provide an opportunity for a lot of our graduates.” He’s already sent a note of thanks to Gov. Hogan, and the County Commissioners plan to follow suit.
