CAMBRIDGE - Fred Douglas Lake, 90, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007, at his home on Washington Street.
He was born May 6, 1917, the son of the late Monroe F. Lake Sr. and Leomia Dennard Lake.
Mr. Lake was raised in Bucktown and attended the public schools of Dorchester County. He was a farmer, landlord and bus contractor in partnership with his late father and brother, Monroe F. Lake Jr.
He served his country during World War II, earning the Good Conduct Medal and the following ribbons: American Theater, the Asiatic Pacific Theater, the Philippine Liberation and the World War II Victory. Upon completion of duty in the South Pacific with the rank of TEC 5, he returned home.
For more than 60 years he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Lake is survived by his three sisters, Victoria L. Waters, Millie G. Lake and Eunice James; two nephews, Benito D. Lake Sr. (Barbara) and attorney Edward M. James Sr. (Constance); one great-niece, Bronte Lake; three great-nephews, Benito D. Lake Jr., Edward Jr. and Rashad I. James; and five cousins, Monroe and Flossie G. Pinder, Devenia P. Wallace, Mary Dennard Turner and Constance D. Mungin; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lake was preceded in death by two brothers, Oliver and Monroe; and three sisters, Hattie Lake, Lena Lake Pinder and Virgie Lake Camper, Ph.D.
The wake will be held from 7 to 8 tonight at the Boardley Funeral Home.
On Friday, family hour will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral services immediately following at 11:30 a.m. at the Boardley Funeral Home. The Rev. Anthony Wheatley will be officiating. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans" Cemetery at Beulah.
