SALISBURY - Ernest Lee Walker, now as "Slim" to some, died on Thursday, June 7, 2007, at the Coastal Hospice in Salisbury.
He was born July 1, 193,0 in Montezuma, Ga., son of Charlie and Martha Walker.
He received his early education and attended the Rocky Mount Methodist Church in Garden Valley, Ga.
Mr. Walker worked as a laborer prior to moving to Cambridge. His work history includes Phillips Packing Co. in Cambridge and then James Julian Co. in Wilmington, Del., as a truck driver and mechanic. He retired from there after 35 years of employment.
Mr. Walker was considered a "jack of all trades." He loved listening to music and taking trips to visit his family. After retirement he loved having coffee with "the boys" and going fishing.
He is survived by a lifetime companion, Elsie Hughes; two sisters, Clara Tilghman of Cambridge and Ileva Dean of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Charles Walker of New Brunswick, N.J., and Thomas Mitchell of Salisbury; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marvis Walker; two sisters, Hazel Grace Walker and Mary Lee Matthews; a brother-in-law, Oscar Tilghman and a number of other relatives.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the New Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church, 601 Douglas St., Cambridge with Minister Adrian Newton officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bennis Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.
