SHARPTOWN - Edward Earl Gutermuth, 84, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 17, 2007 at his home and was pronounced at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born on Feb. 10, 1922 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Christian Burkis Gutermuth and Ernestine Keller Gutermuth.

Mr. Gutermuth left school during the Great Depression to support his family. In the late 1930s he began a career with Crosse & Blackwell that ended with him as line foreman when the plant closed in 1972. He was then employed in the same capacity with Coldwater Seafood until his retirement. He was a member of the Nestle Quarter Century Club, the National Rifle Association and the AARP.

He married the former Cecelia Jesse Wise on Dec. 30, 1941 just prior to his induction into the U.S. Army.

Mr. Gutermuth was a veteran of WWII having served his country in the 442nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Batallion 28 Infantry Division in WWII. He landed at Omaha Beach and earned battle stars for the D-Day invasion, Heutgen Forest and Battle of the Bulge among others. He received the Good Conduct Medal, EMEATO Medal, WWII Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class in the late 1945.

After the War he continued his education at the National Radio Institute, studying Radio and TV servicing, a trade which he pursued for a number of years as a second job.

He had attended Royal Oak Church, Quantico.

Surviving is his wife of 65 years, of Cecelia Jesse Wise Gutermuth of Sharptown; a son, Robert Gutermuth and his wife, Wendy of Cambridge; daughter, C. Marianne Stevens and her husband, Robert of Birkley Springs, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Anne Abbott and her husband, Bryan of Hurlock, Katie Gutermuth of Cambridge; a grandson, Brian Schilling of Beaver, W.Va.; three great-grandchildren, Camryn and Bryan Abbott and Kaytlyn Schilling.

Preceding him in death besides his parents, were two brothers, Christian and Franklin and their spouses; three sisters, Thelma Huebschmann, Mary Fischer and Florence Grebe and their spouses, and a grandson, Robert Edward Gutermuth.

Funeral services will be held in the Mausoleum Chapel at Spring Hill Memory Gardens, Hebron, at 11 a.m. on Friday, with Military Honors. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Joe Lynch. Burial will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675-8517.

Arrangements are being handled by Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge.
