CAMBRIDGE - Edith W. Fitzgerald, of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Friday, March 20, 2009. She was 93. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Feb. 12, 1916, and was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Ward. She moved to the Eastern Shore in 1945 and on Aug. 11, 1945, she was married to Wendell C. Fitzgerald. He passed away on March 8, 2005. She retired from Leggett's Department Store in Cambridge, and always remembered her many years working there as a saleslady with fondness. Mrs. Fitzgerald was a devoted wife and mother and derived much pleasure from being with, and talking to friends and neighbors, owning dachshunds, maintaining and restoring her home. She had been in failing health for several months, and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital on Friday afternoon where she passed away. Survivors include a son, Stephen R. Fitzgerald of Hollywood, Fla.; and four nieces. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, May Grayson and Evelyn Monahan; and one nephew. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
