CAMBRIDGE - Edith Reta Newton (nee. Meekins), 88, of Cambridge, passed on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at the Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born to the late Clarence and Rhoda Meekins, on April 30, 1923, in Lakesville, Md. Edith graduated from Cambridge High School where she was a member of the girls Basketball team. Edith moved to New York City where she was a quality control inspector for General Motors Corporation until her retirement. She married the late Hasten Leroy Newton in 1978, and they lived together in New York City and Laurel, Md., before returning to Cambridge, Md. She was a lover of travel, and an active member of the Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter and only child, Edith L. Snyder of East Stroudsburg, Pa. She is also survived by granddaughter Jasmine N. Snyder, of Amityville, N.Y., and grandson Bryant W. Snyder of Union City, N.J.; aunts, Reesie Camper and Catherine Marine; several nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends. Services will be noon, Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Waugh Chapel UM Church, 425 High St., Cambridge, with a viewing Thursday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at Henry Funeral Home PA, Cambridge, and one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow in the Bethel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
