SALISBURY - Dorothy Hobson Matthews died Sunday, June 3, 2018, at her home. Born in Lone Rock, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Harry William Hobson and Mary Dorothy Dittmer Hobson.
Raised on a small family farm, she completed secretarial school in Chicago and relocated to San Diego to work with Consolidated Vultee Aircraft in support of the war effort. She later moved to Maryland and worked with Ernest at Matthews Poultry before starting a banking career, and served as a branch manager and loan officer for what is now M&T Bank until her retirement in 1990. She maintained a historic Newtown home and a family farm.
She is survived by four children, Daniel H. Matthews, Theodore P. Matthews, Dorothy K. Ballard and Robert L. Matthews; stepchildren, Ernest C. Matthews, Pat Schrawder and Mary E. Donoway; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wallace Hobson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Ernest Matthews, in 1989; a brother, William Hobson; and a sister, Cleo Roberts.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. The Rev. George Patterson will officiate. Interment will follow in Springhill Memory Gardens. Friends may visit that Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bounds Funeral Home in Salisbury or from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church.
