Doris Virginia Carroll Oster

EASTON - Doris Virginia Carroll Oster, 87, a five year resident of HeartFields in Easton, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Pines in Easton. Born Feb. 2, 1923, in Eldorado, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Margaret P. Carroll. She loved singing and playing the guitar. As a child, Doris and her sister Charlotte sang and played guitar on the radio and were known as the Sunshine Twins. Family visits always included Doris and Charlotte bringing their guitars and everyone joining in singing gospel favorites. She very much enjoyed traveling the country with her husband Richard in their RV where they were able to visit most of the United States and for a short time, resided in Canada. While living in Canada, she was a member of a curling team. She loved dogs, especially black labs, reading, and cross word puzzles. She worked at E.I. Dupont in Seaford and later for Caldwell Castings in Cambridge. She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte S. Nickerson and her husband Ronald J. of Choptank and Dixie L. Spear of Baltimore; a daughter in-law, Linda M. Spear of Chevy Chase; three grandsons, Lynn B. Thomas, Jr. and his wife Susan, Ricky J. Thomas and his wife Kim, and John C. Thomas-Mason and his wife Ashley; four great-grandchildren, Paige and Beth Thomas and Gabriel and Adan Thomas-Mason; two stepsons, Jim Oster and his wife Rhonda of Guelph, Ontario and Harry Oster and his wife Pat of Maumee, Ohio; a step-daughter, Mary Sputore and her husband Paul of Batavia, N.Y.; and ten step-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Oster on Oct. 20, 2005; her son, Joseph C. Spear and her sister, Charlotte P. Marvel. Funeral service were held on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market, where friends called one hour prior to the service. Rev. Mary Ann Farnell will officiate. A private interment took place at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lake Placid, Fla. Memorial donations may be made to Dorchester County Humane Society, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, Maryland 21613 or to Alzheimer's Association, 909 Progress Circle, Salisbury, MD 21804 or to American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.
