Doris Estelle Wolff, 93

RHODESDALE - Doris Estelle Wolff, 93, of Rhodesdale, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. Miss Wolff lived near her family in Winston-Salem during the year preceding her death. A memorial service will be noon, Sunday, Oct. 25, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Sharptown, with Pastor James Penuel III officiating. Interment of ashes will follow at the Galestown Cemetery. Miss Wolff was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Rhodesdale to Curtis and Florence Wolff. She graduated from Hurlock High School in 1933, and attended Blackstone College in Virginia and the Women's College of the Univ. of North Carolina in Greensboro, N.C., before working in Washington, D.C., for Armour and Co. and F.W. Berens Co. She returned to the family farm in the 1950's to care for her parents' estate. Miss Wolff enjoyed reading, gardening and cooking, was the family historian and wordsmith, and was an avid letter-writer and player of Rook and Scrabble. She played a huge role in the lives of her extended family and hosted many a family reunion at her home, complete with her famous chicken salad and sweet potato biscuits. Miss Wolff was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Sharptown and taught Sunday School classes for many years. She is survived by niece, Susan Wolff Andrews of Winston-Salem, N.C.; niece, Janet Wolff Lorin of Walterboro, S.C.; nephew, David Wolff of Cordova, Tenn.; and cousins, Rodman Wolff of Easton, Virginia Wolff Hibbler of Glen Burnie, and Jeannette Smoot of Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Stanley Wolff, and Vance Rudolph Wolff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church in Sharptown.
