Cleveland's Cultural Renaissance Attracts Families With New Museum Experience

Posted

Other cities may tout their family attractions, but Cleveland has reinvented them. After a decade-long, $150 million transformation, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History has  been named one of the World's Most Beautiful Museums by  Prix Versailles, an honor previously awarded to only seven museums.

As the only natural history museum listed, and one of only two museums in the United States, Cleveland joins the world stage for design and innovation.

“This international recognition is a proud moment for our Museum and the city of Cleveland. It reflects a broader cultural renaissance unfolding across the city—driven by collaboration, vision, and a shared belief that world-class institutions belong here,” said Sonia Winner, President & CEO of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

But this isn't just about architectural bragging rights. This renovation is just the latest in a series of investments that have transformed this Rust Belt city into the Midwest's most surprising family destination.

It’s not a coincidence– it's a strategy. Cleveland offers  a vast array of cultural, sports, and  dining options while maintaining Midwest accessibility and affordability.

Cleveland's Cultural Renaissance

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History's recent Prix Versailles didn't happen in isolation; the recognition represents the city's decade-long cultural transformation.

Most museums feature static, traditional exhibits organized by discipline or period. The new galleries tell a unified story of life on Earth.

"By placing visitors at the center of the story of our planet, we're inspiring all to foster a deeper understanding of science and a connection to nature," says Sonia Winner, President and CEO. "Every aspect of our transformed Museum aims to achieve one unified vision: to promote healthy humans, a healthy planet, and a better future for all."

Minutes away, the Cleveland Museum of Art consistently ranks among the most visited in the world. This isn't the kind of museum where you show up, look at a couple of van Goghs, then find the nearest bar. It's home to over 61,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years — including oil paintings by Picasso, ancient Grecian statues, and 100 vivid images of Marilyn Monroe courtesy of Andy Warhol.

The gallery also includes the 40-foot ArtLens Wall, which cycles through the museum's entire gallery by displaying a new selection every 40 seconds. Parents with toddlers can participate in specialized Stroller Tours, making high art accessible to the youngest family members.

No trip to Cleveland is complete without a stop at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which boasts a vast collection of memorabilia for everyone. Dad can spend time at the current Bon Jovi Forever full-flood exhibit, which features never-before-seen artifacts from the band's 40+ year career.

The contemporary exhibit, "Right Here Right Now," features items from Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and, yes, Taylor Swift.

Expanding Family Entertainment

The city's three major professional sports teams—the Browns, Guardians, and Cavaliers—call downtown Cleveland home. The Kids Clubhouse at Progressive Field allows kids to peek inside the baseball team's locker room and step into the batter's box for an authentic, virtual reality experience.

The Browns have built a similar family infrastructure with their Jr. Browns Backers, which connects young football fans ages four to twelve with members-only events, unique merchandise, and access to an online activity center.

Family entertainment peaks at Playhouse Square, the country's largest performing arts center outside New York City. The theater district comprises eleven venues within a one-block radius and hosts over 1,000 performances annually, featuring Broadway and comedy shows, concerts, and ballets.

Award-Wining Dining

Four local chefs earned prestigious James Beard Award nominations this year, a culinary recognition that places Cleveland alongside other foodie destinations, such as Nashville and Portland.

Vinnie Cimino of  Cordelia, arguably one of the city's best dining experiences, was a Best Chef: Great Lakes finalist. With heritage-rich  recipes  and cocktails inspired by local farms, the team has also been named Cleveland Magazine's 2023 Best New Restaurant and one of Tasting Table's 22 Best New Restaurants in the US.

The James Beard recognition validates what locals already know: Cleveland's chefs create exceptional  food  with a welcoming atmosphere that knows exceptional doesn't mean exclusive.

“What makes Cleveland dining exceptional is its incredible melting pot of cultures and hospitality. From the most authentic, perfect Szechuan soup dumplings to pizza that rivals the finest slice in NYC and everything in between. We greet you at the door with hardy smiles and welcome you into our proverbial homes just like our grandparents did, and just like she did, we feed you well!” says Vinnie Cimino.

Cleveland's dining extends beyond white-table establishments. At Happy Dog, visitors can customize all-beef hot dogs with house-made sloppy joe and Spaghetti Os, garlicky escarole, or caramelized onions. The city's sweet treats have earned their following. Mitchell's Ice Cream crafts handmade flavors, from kid-friendly Blue Cosmo ice cream cones to vegan salted caramel pecan (a must-try). Head to their Ohio City Kitchen location and watch their ice cream and toppings being made from scratch.

Unique Cleveland Experiences

Adventure-seeking families can head just 60 miles west to Cedar Point Amusement Park for some of the world's tallest and fastest roller coasters. This closeness eliminates the need for expensive multi-day theme park packages by providing the same adrenaline-pumping experiences that typically require flights to California or Florida.

“Cleveland is one of very few mid-sized cities where families can enjoy award-winning museums and culture as well as outdoor activities, says Emily Lauer, Vice President of PR & Communications at  Destination Cleveland.

Uniquely Cleveland, the A Christmas Story House is one of its most distinctive attractions. Steeped in nostalgia, visitors can walk through the exact rooms where Ralphie dreamed of his Red Ryder BB Gun as well as admire the infamous leg lamp.

Lauer continues, “With a mix of history, outdoor adventure, kid-approved dining and affordable attractions, Cleveland offers family fun to fit every interest.”
