HURLOCK - Charles Wesley Hughes Sr., 68, passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2007 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born Nov. 1, 1938, to Daniel Hughes Sr. and Lula Strawberry Hughes. Charles attended Dorchester County Public Schools and graduated from Mace"s Lane High School in 1956. Upon graduating he had worked in several capacities to include car salesman, farm worker, factory worker, and custodian for schools. Prior to going out on disability in 1995, Mr. Hughes was a machinist for Western Publishing Co.
On Dec. 25, 1959, Mr. Hughes was united in holy matrimony to the former Viola Lucille Dennis of Snow Hill. This union was blessed with six children.
At a very young age, Mr. Hughes became a Christian. Countless hours were spent studying the Bible. He was a faithful member of The National Church of God, Inc., East New Market, and served as a deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, youth director, and president of the choir.
Mr. Hughes was an avid reader and loved to dress up. He also loved good gospel music and spent hours listening to his favorite songs.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, Viola L. Hughes, Mr. Hughes is survived by his children: Randall L. Hughes of Hebron, Diane R. Hughes of Salisbury, Charlotte F. Harris (John) of Cambridge, Charles W. Hughes Jr. of Hurlock, Desmond D. Hughes (Sheree) of Salisbury, and Lorenzo L. Hughes of Hurlock. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers: Daniel Hughes Jr. (Gertrude), and Thomas Hughes of Hurlock, Roy Hughes and Samuel Hughes Sr. of Cambridge; two sisters: Peggy Macer (Glen) of East New Market, and Edna Hughes of Salisbury; one aunt, Regina Hughes of Hurlock and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Hughes.
Funeral services will be held at Refuge Temple Church of God, 600 Robbins St., Cambridge, beginning at noon on Saturday. Burial will follow in Petersburg Cemetery.
There will be a viewing Friday from 6-8 p.m. at The National Church of God, Inc. East New Market.
Arrangements by Henry Funeral Home, PA. in Cambridge.
