CAMBRIDGE - Charles W. Parks, 81, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007.
He was born in Cambridge on Sept. 30, 1925, and was a son of the late Ralph Jacob and Bertha Melissa Phillips Parks.
Mr. Parks attended schools in Cambridge. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in Guam for three years during World War II.
He served as an apprenticeship as a bricklayer with Jerome Mowbray and then worked for Allen Tyler & Sons as a bricklayer for 30 years, from 1946 to 1976. He later worked for the city of Cambridge as director of public works from June 1976 to January 1993, until he retired.
Mr. Parks had been a member of Zion United Methodist Church since March 22, 1959, where he had served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, as well as numerous other offices.
He enjoyed sailing, fishing, showing beagles and playing golf, and was a very accomplished wood worker.
On Dec. 23, 1972, he was married to the former Jane Kirwan.
Mr. Parks was a member of the Bricklayers and Trowel Trades Intl. Union, an honorary member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc., and a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Choptank Memorial Post 7460 and the Air Force Guam Group and was a former member of the Eastern Shore Sailing Association and the Cambridge Yacht Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jane K. Parks of Cambridge; two sons, C. Larry Parks and his wife, Carolyn Parks of Warrenton, Va., and Paul W. Parks and his wife, Kathleen Parks of Shady Side, and two grandchildren, Julie C. Parks and John C. Parks.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eldridge "Drake" Parks.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Zion United Methodist Church on Locust Street in Cambridge with the Rev. Kevin E. English officiating. Burial will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard.
The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613.
Pallbearers will be Bob McClain, Ken Tyler, Paul Hughes, Jim Carpenter, Russell E. Wroten and Wesley Cannon.
