ERIE, Pa. - Charles "Gibby" Harris, age 87, of Erie, was swept peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father on May 14, 2011, at the home of his granddaughter. He was born on April 26, 1924, in Cambridge, Md., to the late Charles and Emma Hurley Harris. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII. Gibby was a self-employed contractor for over 30 years, doing expert plastering, wallboard and ceramic tile. Many people and family members today still enjoy and cherish his handiwork. He also was employed for 10 years with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company of Cambridge, Md. After his retirement he and his wife Jean moved to Harborcreek and built and made their home there. Gibby was known for his beautiful smile, joy and laughter. Everyone he met was his friend. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years and golf in his later years. He loved spending time with Barbara, his loving family, and friends. He enjoyed God's creation and was a fan of his Baltimore Orioles. He and Barbara spent their days together going places every day. He loved to go eat out and was a member of the Sienbenbuerger Club. He was a longtime member of South Harborcreek United Methodist Church. Gibby was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Jean Hurley Harris. He is survived by his sister in Cambridge, Md., Kitty Langrall; his loving companion, Barbara Savelli with whom he resided; four loving daughters, Judy Dougan (Graydon) of Harborcreek, Pat Hurley (Gilbert) of East New Market, Md., Cindy Dougan (Roger) of Harborcreek, and Connie Jones (Bob) of Easton, Md.; eight grandchildren, Dinah Carnes, Jennifer Dougan, Art Dougan, Gibby Dougan, Roger Jay Dougan, Macayla Dunn, Brianna Dunn and Meggan Mobilia; seven great-grandchildren, Garret, Ava, Lyle, Hallie, Carter, Landon and Allison. A Memorial Service was held at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Rd., Erie, PA 16510. Memorial contributions may be made to a Charity of One's Choice.
