Charles E. Hughes Jr., 79, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
He was born in Cambridge on March 30, 1927, and was a son of the late Charles Emerson and Eva Lee Grace Willey Hughes Sr.
He attended schools in Vienna. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 11, 1945, and was honorably discharged in Nov. 27, 1946. While serving in the Army he served a tour of duty in Egypt.
Mr. Hughes had been employed at the Dorchester County Roads Board as a truck driver for 20 years when he retired in March of 1987.
He was a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion and also Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW.
On Feb. 14, 1994, he was married to Norma Jean Hurley. He had been in failing health for the past several months, and had been a patient at PRMC since Monday.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Jean Hughes of Linkwood; two daughters, Linda Powell of Tyaskin and Debbie Wolf of Tyaskin; one son, Larry W. Hughes of Tyaskin; five stepdaughters, Debbie Horseman, Cheryl Todd, Dena Dukes and Vicky Wheatley, all of Vienna and Nancy Robinson of Salisbury; two stepsons, Russell D. Willoughby of Hurlock and G. Michael Willoughby of Cambridge. He is also survived by four grandchildren, 16 step grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Rathell of Sharptown, Nancy Kelly an, Shirley Marine both of Salisbury; two brothers, Leroy Hughes of Hurlock and Norman Hughes of Florida and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Thomas.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Maryland Veterans" Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., in Cambridge.
