Bertie Jolley Wongus

Bertie Jolley Wongus, 86 CHRIST ROCK - Bertie Jolley Wongus, 86, departed this life Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Dorchester General Hospital, in Cambridge. She was born Dec. 24, 1921 in Dorchester County, daughter of the late Charles George and Rosie Ward Jolley. Being the daughter of a share cropper, she attended various Dorchester County Schools. As a dedicated wife and mother, she was a homemaker who worked seasonally at local canneries. On Aug. 30, 1948, she married Charles Woodrow Wongus Sr. (deceased). From this union they had seven children. She is survived by six children: Dorothy (Leon) Pinder of Philadelphia, Pa.; Laurine (Buddy) Ennals, Evelyn, Sherwood (Flora), and Roberta W. Wongus of Cambridge and Richard (Rene) of Salisbury; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Wongus of Hampton, Va.; three sisters, Naomi Thompson of Baltimore; Rosie Jones, Annie Mae (Sidney), and Arneda (Harvey) Spencer of Cambridge; two brothers: John Jolley and James (Lillian) Jolley of Cambridge; an aunt-in-law, Evangeline (Leon) Banks; three sisters-in-laws: Gloria Wongus of Cambridge, Agnes (Tyrone) Seymore of Baltimore, and Veronica Jones of Cambridge; a brother-in-law, Alonza Jones Jr. of Cambridge; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins; special friends Mildred Henry, Geraldine Ellis, and Ralph Jackson Jr. and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Charles Sr.; son: Charles Jr. and grandson: Charles III. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at New Revived United Methodist Church in Smithville with the Rev. Jerome E. Tilghman Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Christ Rock Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Boardley Funeral Home, in Cambridge and one hour prior to the service.
