SALISBURY - Bernice F. Burns, formerly of Cambridge, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in Deer's Head Hospital Center in Salisbury, after a prolonged illness. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Mitchell and Frieda Horwath of Cambridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Burns of Cambridge in 1965; and her son, George Warren Burns of Salisbury in 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Burns Dykes (Alan) of Salisbury; nine grandchildren, Lori Dykes Neske, Terresa Dykes Souder, Melissa Burns Lear, A. Gregory Dykes, Stephanie Burns Zelker, Kim Burns Scholl, Amy Burns Donoway, Jonathan Burns, and Shawn A. Dykes; and 13 great-grandchildren. Although being a paraplegic for 63 years, she was employed by PRMC in several departments for almost 20 years prior to retiring. Mrs. Burns received an award from the Maryland "Governor's Committee For Overcoming Her Disability and Achieving Independence In Her Community" in 1969. Mrs. Burns as one of Jehovah's Witnesses for some 65 years, was very active in sharing what she had learned from the Bible, and her faith in its' promises, with others. A memorial service was 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, located at 202 Moonglow Road in Fruitland (just off of St. Lukes Road). Colin D. Pedwell officiated.
