VIENNA - Bernard E. Murphy Sr., of Vienna, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was 82. Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Griffiths Neck, he was the son of the late Thomas Owen Murphy and Mabel Fleming Murphy. He was a 1940 graduate of Vienna High School. When his sons were young he was active with the Boy Scouts and Little League. He worked at Farmers and Planters in Salisbury, many of those years as manager and was currently serving on the Board of Directors. He was a member of Vienna United Methodist Church, Rockawalkin Ruritan Club, and Choptank Lodge 138 AF&AM in East New Market. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis M. Murphy of Vienna; three sons, Bernie Murphy Jr. and his wife Nancy of Alexandria, Va., Phillip Murphy and his wife Sharris of Alma, Ga., and Patrick Murphy and his wife Kim of Kent Island; seven grandchildren; Helene Murphy, Delva Murphy, Phillip Murphy, Merrick Murphy, Christopher Murphy, Heather Murphy, and Paige Murphy; three great-grandchildren, Cristian, Noel, and Mereck; a brother, Randall Murphy of Salisbury; a sister, Mary Jeanette Walther of Pittsburgh, Pa.; beloved sister-in-law, Janet M. Webb of Spruce Pine, N.C.; nieces, nephews, and many cousins. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today, March 11, 2009, at Vienna United Methodist Church in Vienna, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Kim Gilson and Rev. Mary Ann Farnell will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Vienna. Jerry Rider, Steve White, Moody Gray, Bunky Bell, Steve Hurst, and David Warfield will serve as pallbearers. Frank Adkins, John Tillman, Reginald Sellers, and Susan White will serve as honorary pallbearers. Donations in memory of Mr. Murphy may be made to Vienna United Methodist Church, c/o Mary Lee Bradshaw, P.O. Box 212, Vienna, MD 21869 or to Vienna Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Fund, c/o Andrea Outten, 4360 Elliott Island Road, Vienna, MD 21869. The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
