Mississippi police arrest a man in the death of Tasia Fortune
SUMMARY: Mississippi police have arrested a man in the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman found hanging from a tree last month. Police in Jackson told reporters Friday that the man was arrested after the state medical examiner’s office determined Thursday evening that the death was a homicide. Police discovered Fortune’s body hanging in the backyard of an abandoned home on Aug. 3. The police say the case is active and more warrants will be pending. Fortune’s mother says the family is in shock and still doesn't have a lot of answers. She says police did not share a motive or whether DNA led them to the arrest.

US marks 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks
SUMMARY: The U.S. is commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that left nearly 3,000 people dead and the nation shaken. On Friday, people laid wreaths, flew flags, read victims' names and held moments of silence and vigils. In 2001, attackers took command of four commercial jets and rammed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. On Friday, President Donald Trump attended a ceremony at the Pentagon. Former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden and current Vice President JD Vance went to ground zero in New York, where victims’ relatives read aloud the long list of names. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum laid a wreath at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

Diesel prices are hitting record highs at a bad time for many US farmers
SUMMARY: The price of diesel is hitting record highs just as many U.S. farmers are harvesting two of the nation’s largest commodities, soybeans and corn. That means they'll need countless gallons of the fuel for combines, tractors and trucks. Diesel hit a record price in the U.S. last week, soaring to an average of $5.85 a gallon for the first time as the six-month war with Iran disrupted the world’s flow of fuel. On Friday, it was at $6.05. The diesel spike adds to an already tough year for many farmers, who also faced higher costs for fertilizer, seeds and equipment.

A pilot of the Amazon cargo plane that careened off Miami runway warned it was coming in too fast
SUMMARY: One of the pilots of the Amazon cargo plane that careened off a Miami runway and killed five people repeatedly warned they were coming in too fast roughly two minutes ahead of the collision. That’s according to highlights of the cockpit recording that the National Transportation Safety Board released Wednesday. The summary of cockpit voice recordings compiled by the NTSB said the fellow pilot never gave “a consistent verbal response” to the warnings. The plane touched down awkwardly, briefly attempted to take off and then smashed into a van carrying the five victims.

What to know about the Amazon cargo plane crash in Miami that killed 5 workers in a van
SUMMARY: Investigators are working to figure out what happened in the crash of an Amazon cargo jet in Miami that killed five people on the ground. The Boeing 767 overshot the runway, hitting a van and an SUV. Five people working for a cleaning service died when the van was struck. The National Transportation Safety Board is focusing on the lack of a system to stop speeding jets at the airport. Investigators will also see if strong winds and a long landing contributed to the crash. The plane, originally a passenger jet, was converted to cargo in 2015. The NTSB will review its history and maintenance records.

Convicted sex offender offered opening prayer at rally for GOP Senate nominee in North Carolina
SUMMARY: A North Carolina pastor who led the opening prayer at a recent campaign stop for Republican Senate nominee Michael Whatley is a registered sex offender, twice sentenced to prison. Records show pastor Daimon L. King was convicted in 1998 and again in 2010 for offenses involving children. Democrats have hammered Whatley over his ties to another sex offender who served in the state GOP when Whatley was chairman. The episode comes at a critical time in a marquee Senate race that could help decide which party controls the chamber. It risks undermining one of Whatley’s central campaign arguments — that his Democratic opponent, former Gov. Roy Cooper, is soft on crime.

CIA releases dozens of presidential daily briefs on bin Laden and al-Qaida before Sept. 11
SUMMARY: Several dozen presidential briefing documents have been declassified on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. These documents detail intelligence gathered about Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida leading up to the hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people and upended American national security. The records trace CIA analysts’ evolving understanding of al-Qaida and their efforts to warn of bin Laden’s attack plotting. CIA Director John Ratcliffe calls Friday's release “an act of exceptional transparency.” The documents include reports from April 1998 to Sept. 12, 2001. They don't appear to break any new ground on the planning of the attacks or on U.S. officials’ understanding of how they had unfolded.

Trump commemorates the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at the Pentagon
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has observed the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by attending a ceremony at the Pentagon. In remarks Friday, he recalled the sense of American unity following the attacks, saying “We were all New Yorkers that day." The attacks claimed nearly 3,000 lives, including 184 people who died at the Pentagon. In a downpour at daybreak, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and top military officials stood outside the Pentagon and watched as a giant American flag was unfurled on the building struck by one of the hijacked planes. Trump and Hegseth sought to connect the events of 9/11 to the war on Iran in their remarks.

Attack that closed key Saudi pipeline is blamed on Iran-backed militias in Iraq
SUMMARY: Iraq's government is investigating after Iran-backed militias there are accused of attacking a key Saudi oil pipeline. Drone strikes shut down Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. Iraq confirmed the attacks originated from its territory and pledged to investigate, dismissing two senior officials. Regional officials recently told the AP that the Houthis and the Iraqi militias have coordinated attacks on Saudi Arabia. The Houthis based in Yemen are also pressuring the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, affecting global trade. U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran was “probably” responsible for the pipeline attack but tried to calm concerns.

Trump touches a nerve while in Ireland by saying reunification would be 'fantastic'
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has touched a political nerve by saying a unified Ireland would be “fantastic.” The American leader is on a weekend trip for a golf tournament at the Doonbeg course he owns in Ireland. In Dublin, thousands of people turned out in protest. Trump met with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin. He expressed support for unifying the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. It's a sensitive topic due to historical tensions and violence. Previous U.S. presidents have avoided direct comments on the issue. Trump also met Irish President Catherine Connolly. Trump’s son Eric says the Trump family is loved in Ireland.

8 killed in Russian strikes on Ukraine as Putin warns Europe against sending troops
SUMMARY: Russian strikes have killed eight civilians and wounded dozens in Ukraine, according to local officials. President Vladimir Putin has warned that sending European troops into Ukraine would mean direct conflict with Russia. Ukraine faces mounting pressure from Russia's intensified air campaign. Moscow's attacks target Ukraine's power grid ahead of winter, aiming to demoralize civilians. Putin, speaking at the BRICS summit in India, denied that Russia poses any threat to Europe. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he would meet Putin if both leaders were invited to the Group of 20 summit in December in Miami.

Saudi Arabia has few options as it faces mounting threats from Iran and its allies
SUMMARY: Houthi rebels in Yemen are advancing toward a crucial trade chokepoint. Attacks blamed on Iraqi militias forced the closure of a major pipeline. Iran and its allies are unleashing a nightmare scenario for Saudi Arabia and unsettling global markets. Control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could allow the Iran-backed rebels to cut off another major export route for Saudi oil as Iran disrupts the Strait of Hormuz. The Saudis could use U.S. support to fight back. But President Donald Trump seems reluctant to widen an already unpopular and stalemated war in the Middle East.

Users in Houthi-held Yemen tried to develop advanced weapons with AI, Anthropic says
SUMMARY: Anthropic says Claude users in northern Yemen tried to use the AI model to develop advanced missiles. The area is controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The company blocked the accounts after identifying them and said the users did not succeed in creating an operational device, though they appear to have conducted a failed test of a guided rocket. The findings appeared in an Anthropic report released Thursday. In recent days, the Houthis have launched waves of attacks on Saudi oil facilities and advanced against Saudi-backed government forces in Yemen. AI is transforming warfare around the world, adding to concerns about its rapid development.

US stocks jump after oil prices ease and an inflation update comes in near expectations
SUMMARY: U.S. stocks rebounded and clawed back much of their losses for the week after oil prices eased off their recent spurt. An update on inflation across the United States that came in close to economists’ expectations also helped calm the market Friday. The S&P 500 climbed 0.9% and broke a four-day losing streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 1%. A drop of nearly 3% for Brent oil's price took some pressure off inflation, while expectations strengthened in the bond market for an upcoming hike to interest rates by the Federal Reserve.

The Houthi advance in Yemen raises concerns about a key shipping choke point
SUMMARY: Iran-backed Houthi rebels have captured the Red Sea port of Mokha and the strategic island of Mayun in Yemen. This move brings their forces to the heart of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical global trade route. The strait is vital for Saudi oil shipments to Asia, especially after Iran restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi tankers are now using the Suez Canal as an alternative, but this route is more time-consuming and costly. The situation raises concerns about further disruptions to global shipping.
