Edouard, now a tropical depression, drenches Texas with flash flooding and downed trees
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Edouard has weakened into a depression but is still dumping nearly 2 feet of rain in some places and flooding parts of Texas. Schools and municipal offices were closed Wednesday, and residents were told to stay home. The National Hurricane Center says the storm made landfall Tuesday near the Texas-Louisiana border with winds of 60 mph. More than 70,000 utility customers were without power. In the Pacific Ocean, there are two hurricanes and a tropical storm churning. Lowell and Karina are powerful Category 4 hurricanes, and Tropical Storm Marie was expected to become a hurricane on Wednesday.

Judge questions Lindsay Clancy jury about a woman accused of filming them, lawyer says
SUMMARY: Jury deliberations in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial have resumed for a fifth day. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, doesn’t deny strangling her three children in their Massachusetts home in 2023. But her attorney argues that postpartum psychosis led to her actions. Prosecutors argue she knew what she was doing. The jury is struggling to agree on her criminal responsibility. Jury deliberations resumed for a fifth day Wednesday, after her lawyer said the judge questioned jurors one by one about a woman who was arrested a day earlier and charged with filming the jury. The woman told reporters she was trying to film Clancy, not the jury.

What happens next if the jury in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial can't reach a verdict?
SUMMARY: If a Massachusetts jury can't reach a verdict on whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible when she strangled her three children in 2023, a mistrial will be declared and then prosecutors will have to decide whether to retry Clancy on murder charges. Legal experts say there also are other options, including offering Clancy a plea deal or deciding not to put her on trial again. The closely watched trial has featured conflicting testimony about her mental health and what role it played in the killings. Clancy doesn’t deny strangling her children at their home, but says postpartum psychosis led to her actions. Prosecutors argue she knew what she was doing.

America's story intertwined with its military history, but a military-civilian disconnect persists
SUMMARY: The story of the U.S. is intertwined with its military history, from its creation in 1776 to the expansion of its physical borders to its role in the global political and economic order. But in a nation that often lionizes an idea of military service, the vast majority of American adults don’t serve, or aren’t very connected to the people who do and their families. Those who do serve often end up coming from generations of the same families, or the same communities, from certain states more than others. It’s a concentration that can make the responsibilities and burdens of military life land disproportionately on them.

Judge sends Charlie Kirk murder case to trial with defendant facing potential death penalty
SUMMARY: The murder case against the Utah man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk is headed for trial. Defendant Tyler Robinson faces a potential death sentence if convicted. Utah District Judge Tony Graf on Tuesday sided with prosecutors who said they had “overwhelming” evidence that Robinson shot Kirk as he addressed a crowd last September in Orem, Utah. Robinson’s lawyers have tried to block the case from proceeding to trial. They said prosecutors didn’t give enough evidence to warrant seeking the death penalty. One of Robinson’s attorneys entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf following the decision. Kirk’s family called the ruling “an important step in our family’s pursuit of justice.”

Grand Canyon flooding harms an economy that's still recovering from a fire
SUMMARY: Tourists are scrambling to find lodging elsewhere after deadly flash flooding in the Grand Canyon. A damaged water line shut down all lodging at the canyon’s South Rim. As of Tuesday it's unclear when lodging might reopen. The park remains open to daytime visitors but the natural disaster threatens the area’s economy. South Rim restaurants are open, but experts warn that lost room bookings could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in local revenue. The Grand Canyon drew almost $1 billion a year in spending by nearly 5 million tourists in 2024. Last summer, a wildfire destroyed a lodge and eliminated lodging options at the canyon’s North Rim.

Tiger Woods plans to change not guilty plea in DUI case in Florida, court documents show
SUMMARY: Court documents show that Tiger Woods plans to change his not guilty plea in a DUI case stemming from a rollover crash in Florida. A court hearing was set for Wednesday morning. In March, Woods' Land Rover clipped a truck, rolled onto its side and the golfer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, officials said. A sheriff’s office report said deputies found two pain pills in his pocket and that he showed signs of impairment. The crash was his fourth since 2009. Woods took a leave from professional golf after the 2009 accident and again after the latest crash. He has yet to return to tournament play.

Lawmakers ask Army to explain why it told a military unit to stop specializing in drone warfare
SUMMARY: A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pressing the U.S. Army to explain why it told a unit based in Europe to stop specializing in drone warfare. The Army's order comes as battlefields rapidly evolve and military tactics increasingly rely on uncrewed systems to fight. The 173rd Airborne Brigade was building its own drones and practicing the kind of warfare that Ukraine pioneered against Russia. The lawmakers told the Army in a letter this week that they have deep concerns. They said ending the unit's focus on drones would limit the military's abilities to learn from allies such as Ukraine.

Judge lacked power to overturn ex-soldier Bowe Bergdahl's military conviction, appeals court rules
SUMMARY: An appeals court panel has ruled that a federal judge didn’t have the authority to overturn former U.S. Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl’s military conviction for deserting his post in Afghanistan before Taliban-allied forces abducted him and held him captive for nearly five years. A three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Tuesday ordered the dismissal of Bergdahl’s claims in district court. The panel said U.S. District Judge Walton in Washington lacked the jurisdiction to vacate Bergdahl’s court-martial conviction and sentence in 2023.

Hamilton peppers his campaign remarks with biblical references but also tells voters that he does not plan to use a Senate seat to win more converts. Incumbent Republican Sen. Sen. Ed Markey, 80, wins Mass. Democratic primary over opponent who called for generational change

Seth Moulton, 47, who argued that it was time for a generational change. During the campaign, Moulton told voters it was time to do away with the “status quo.” Markey pointed to Moulton’s more moderate positions to argue that it was Moulton — not the older incumbent — who was out of touch with the state’s voters. Bessent says 19 finance ministers agreed 'cheap exports' are unsustainable, but China dissented
SUMMARY: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says 19 of the members of the G20 agreed to address streams of “cheap exports” that cause global economic imbalances, but China dissented. Bessent says getting even 19 countries to agree to take on the matter shows the enormity of the problem. Bessent spoke after a two-day meeting of the 20 countries in Asheville, North Carolina. Earlier, Bessent highlighted China's record-high trade surplus and excessive regulation as barriers to global growth. Despite concerns about U.S. debt reaching $40 trillion, he played down fears about bond markets. During discussions, he noted areas of agreement with China, particularly on issues like Iran.

House passes short-term funding bill to avoid a shutdown before the election
SUMMARY: The House has passed a short-term measure to fund the federal government into early December. The move is designed to avoid a chaotic shutdown as lawmakers campaign for reelection. The Senate has already overwhelmingly approved the measure, so it now moves to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature. The short-term measure funds federal agencies generally at current levels through Dec. 11. It will give lawmakers more time to find compromise on a full-year measure, though that will likely prove difficult. Iran fires on its Gulf neighbors, retaliating for US strikes after a wedding was hit
SUMMARY: Iranian attacks have targeted U.S. allies across the Gulf as renewed fighting with the United States ended a monthlong lull. An Iranian drone sparked a fire at a residential complex in Kuwait City without causing casualties, while Bahrain intercepted incoming drones. Other attacks overnight and into Wednesday targeted Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq’s Kurdish region. The escalation followed U.S. strikes on Iran, including one that Iranian officials say hit a wedding party, killing at least four people and wounding 68. Congo's Ebola outbreak shows no signs of slowing as deaths top 3,000
SUMMARY: Congo’s Ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,000 people out of more than 6,100 confirmed cases. That's according to the latest government statistics from Wednesday. The disease is spreading at an unprecedented speed that is faster than efforts to track and slow it. Numbers from Congo's Ministry of Health show that the outbreak has recorded 6,186 confirmed cases including 3,007 deaths since it was declared in mid-May. It remains the fastest-growing outbreak of the disease ever. The disease has continued to spread rapidly for several reasons. They included conflict in the eastern region of the country where the outbreak is concentrated. German companies under pressure to adapt as China challenges them at their own game
SUMMARY: China is challenging Germany at its own game of making advanced, highly engineered machinery. It’s a major reason why Europe’s biggest economy is stagnating. And with the government’s popularity sagging, German businesses and politicians are searching for answers. The China shock — as economists call it — is emerging as a key reason for Germany’s chronic economic stagnation since the COVID-19 pandemic. The sluggish economy has helped make Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s governing coalition unpopular ahead of an election Sunday in the eastern region of Saxony-Anhalt in which the far-right Alternative for Germany has its best chance yet of getting its first state governor.

Global warming will exceed limit, UN says in a report that maps path to get back below danger zone
SUMMARY: In a strategic retreat, the United Nations concedes that Earth has lost its chance to prevent some of the worst impacts of global warming. A report released Wednesday by the United Nations Environment Programme reveals that the planet will soon exceed the temperature threshold set by the 2015 Paris climate accord. Instead of giving up, scientists and U.N. officials recommend limiting excessive warming and then bringing temperatures back down. It's called overshoot. This involves slashing fossil fuel use and finding ways to remove carbon dioxide from the air. In the meantime, the world will face decades of increased disasters, rising seas and extinctions.

Tiger Woods pleads no contest to reckless driving charge over rollover crash in Florida
SUMMARY: Tiger Woods has pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge in Florida. Woods was arrested in March following a rollover crash near his home on Jupiter Island and was initially charged with driving under the influence. The golf legend appeared Wednesday in court in Martin County, to enter his plea on the lesser charge. Authorities say deputies found two pain pills in Woods' pocket after the crash, and he showed signs of impairment. He did a Breathalyzer test, which came out negative, but refused to take a urine test. Woods said little during the hearing. He arrived at the courthouse with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, President Donald Trump’s former daughter-in-law.
