Trump administration seeks to halt SNAP food aid payments after a court order
SUMMARY: The Trump administration has asked a federal appeals court to block a judge’s order to distribute November’s full SNAP benefits during a U.S. government shutdown. A U.S. district judge had given the administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. However, the administration is seeking to suspend any court orders requiring it to spend more money than available in a contingency fund. Meanwhile, some states, like Wisconsin, have already started distributing the payments. The ongoing court battle adds to weeks of uncertainty for the food program, which serves about 1 in 8 Americans.

Farmers' Almanac says it will cease publication after 208 years, citing financial challenges
SUMMARY: A 208-year-old publication that farmers, gardeners and others keen to predict the weather have relied on for guidance will be publishing for the final time. Farmers’ Almanac said Thursday that its 2026 edition will be its last, citing the growing financial challenges of producing and distributing the book in today’s “chaotic media environment.” Access to the online version will cease next month. The Maine-based publication was first printed in 1818. It's distinct from the Old Farmer’s Almanac in neighboring New Hampshire. Both publications were among hundreds of almanacs that served a nation of farmers over two centuries ago. Most were regional publications and no longer exist.

Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown arrested on attempted murder charge in Miami shooting
SUMMARY: Former NFL star Antonio Brown has been arrested on an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting after a celebrity boxing event in Miami. Police confirmed Thursday that the 37-year-old Brown was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai. Police spokesman Mike Vega said Brown was initially flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he's being held pending extradition to Miami. An arrest warrant says Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with after the amateur boxing event in May. It was unclear from court documents whether Brown has an attorney.

Vigil held in Kentucky to share sorrow over UPS plane crash that killed at least 13
SUMMARY: A candlelight vigil has been held in Louisville, Kentucky, to honor the victims of a UPS plane crash and anyone else affected by the tragedy. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said it is time to share the heartbreak while the grim task of finding and identifying victims continues. The aircraft caught fire and lost an engine on takeoff Tuesday at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The inferno consumed the enormous aircraft and spread to nearby businesses, killing at least 13 people, including three on the plane. Greenberg described the site of the charred, mangled metal as “horrific.”

Federal judge orders Trump administration to fully fund SNAP benefits in November
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Rhode Island has ordered the Trump administration to find the money to fully fund SNAP benefits for November. The ruling Thursday was in response to a challenge from cities and nonprofits complaining that the administration was only offering to cover 65% of the maximum benefit. The Trump administration said last month that it would not pay benefits at all for November because of the federal shutdown. Last week, two judges ordered the government to pay at least partial benefits using an emergency fund.

What to know about 10% reduction in flights at US airports caused by the government shutdown
SUMMARY: Major U.S. airports are among those seeing reduced air traffic as a 10% cut in flights is phased in because of the government shutdown. A list distributed to airlines and obtained by The Associated Press includes airports in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles among the 40 that will see flights slashed Friday. The Federal Aviation Administration is imposing the reductions to take pressure off air traffic controllers, who are federal employees and have worked without pay during the shutdown. In addition to the reduced flight traffic, the shutdown has led to more flight delays, with experts advising travelers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport, among other tips.

Chicago judge says Border Patrol official lied about threats before restricting agents' use force
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Chicago issued an extensive injunction restricting federal agents’ use of force, saying Thursday that a top Border Patrol official leading an immigration crackdown repeatedly lied about threats posed by protesters and news media. The preliminary injunction came in response to a lawsuit alleging federal agents have used excessive force in their immigration crackdown in the Chicago area. It follows an eight-hour Wednesday hearing with emotional testimony from witnesses who described experiencing tear gas, being shot in the head with pepper balls while praying, and having guns pointed at them when recording agents in residential streets.

A former teacher shot by student, 6, wins $10M jury verdict against ex-assistant principal
SUMMARY: A Virginia jury has awarded $10 million to a former teacher in a lawsuit that accused an administrator of ignoring warnings that a 6-year-old student had a gun before the teacher was shot. Jurors returned the verdict Thursday against Ebony Parker, a former assistant principal at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News. Abby Zwerner was shot in January 2023. A bullet damaged her left hand and remains in her chest. Parker was the only defendant in the lawsuit. The shooting sent shock waves through this Virginia military shipbuilding community and the country at large, with many wondering how a child so young could access a gun and shoot his teacher.

Boeing won't face criminal charge over 737 Max crashes that killed hundreds of people
SUMMARY: A federal judge in Texas has dismissed a criminal conspiracy charge against Boeing related to two 737 Max crashes that killed 346 people. U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor approved the federal government’s request on Thursday. The deal requires Boeing to pay or invest an additional $1.1 billion in fines, compensation for victims’ families, and internal safety measures. The ruling follows a September hearing where victims' relatives urged the judge to appoint a special prosecutor. Republican US Rep. Elise Stefanik is running for governor of New York
SUMMARY: Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik is running for governor of New York. Stefanik represents a sprawling congressional district in northern New York. She launched her campaign Friday. She had stoked speculation for a future run for governor, ramping up her criticism of Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in recent months. Supreme Court weighs longshot appeal to overturn decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide
SUMMARY: A call to overturn the landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide is on the agenda Friday for the justices’ closed-door conference. Among the new cases the justices are expected to consider is a longshot appeal from Kim Davis, the former Kentucky court clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. Davis had been trying to get the court to overturn a lower court order for her to pay $360,000 in damages and attorney’s fees to a couple whom she denied a marriage license. Democrats consider prolonging the shutdown as Republicans prepare new bills without health care fix

Supreme Court lets Trump block transgender and nonbinary people from choosing passport sex markers

Kazakhstan will join the Abraham Accords with Israel in symbolic move to boost the Trump initiative

China seeks to project power far beyond its coast with the new Fujian aircraft carrier
SUMMARY: China has commissioned its latest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, after extensive sea trials. This marks a significant step in expanding its naval power beyond its own waters. The Fujian is China's third carrier and the first designed and built domestically. Chinese state media reported Friday that it was commissioned Wednesday at a naval base on Hainan island. Experts say this move helps China close the gap with the U.S. Navy. The Fujian features advanced electromagnetic launch systems, allowing it to deploy a wider range of aircraft. Disease of 1,000 faces shows how science is tackling immunity’s dark side
SUMMARY: It's one of medicine's biggest mysteries — why sometimes our immune system attacks our own bodies. Autoimmune diseases affect as many as 50 million Americans and millions more worldwide. They're hard to diagnose and treat, and they're on the rise. A Massachusetts woman's journey with one named lupus — called the disease of 1,000 faces for its baffling variety of symptoms — offers a snapshot of the burden.
