The Latest: Supreme Court is hearing arguments on Trump’s tariffs
SUMMARY: The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments over President Donald Trump's tariffs, a key part of his economic and foreign policy. The case involves the tariffs first announced in April on almost all U.S. trading partners and the ones from February on imports from Canada, China and Mexico. Trump justified them by declaring national emergencies. However, lower courts have ruled that he doesn't have unlimited power to set tariffs, as the Constitution grants this power to Congress. The case now arrives before the conservative-led Supreme Court. Tariffs have generated significant revenue but account for less than 4% of federal income.

UPS plane crashes and explodes at a Kentucky airport, leaving at least 9 dead and others missing
SUMMARY: Emergency workers are searching for more victims after at least nine people died and more than a dozen were injured when a UPS plane crashed while taking off at the airport in Louisville, Kentucky. The plane crashed Tuesday as it was departing for Honolulu from Muhammad Ali International Airport. Video showed flames on the plane’s left wing and a trail of smoke. The plane then lifted slightly off the ground before crashing and exploding in a huge fireball. Video also revealed portions of a building’s shredded roof next to the end of the runway. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says he expects the death toll to increase and says 16 families reported loved ones unaccounted for. The airport has resumed operations.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warns of 'mass chaos' in skies if shutdown continues
SUMMARY: Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy predicted Tuesday that there could be chaos in the skies next week if the government shutdown drags on and air traffic controllers miss a second paycheck. The FAA slows down or even stops flights temporarily anytime it is short on controllers or if there is an equipment problem. There have already been numerous delays at airports across the country — sometimes hours long — during the shutdown. Duffy warned that the situation will only get worse the longer the shutdown continues and the financial pressure continues to grow on people who are forced to work without pay. FAA employees already missed one paycheck on Oct. 28. Their next payday is scheduled for next Tuesday.

On Day 36, the government shutdown is the longest ever as Trump pressures GOP senators to end it
SUMMARY: It's Day 36 and the government shutdown is now the longest ever. President Donald Trump says Democrats must agree to reopen the government before he'll negotiate with them over demands to salvage expiring health insurance subsidies. During a meeting Wednesday at the White House with Republican senators Trump blamed the shutdown for the GOP's election losses Tuesday and he pushed senators to get rid of the filibuster. But Senate GOP leader John Thune says that's “not happening” and top Democrat Chuck Schumer says the election night results “ought to send a much needed bolt of lightning to Donald Trump that he should meet with us to end this crisis.”

Judge in Comey case scolds prosecutors as he orders them to produce records from probe
SUMMARY: A federal judge has ordered prosecutors in the criminal case of former FBI Director James Comey to produce materials from the investigation, saying he’s concerned the Justice Department’s position had been to “indict first and investigate later.” Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick in Virginia instructed prosecutors to produce by the end of Thursday grand jury materials and other evidence investigators seized during the investigation. The order followed arguments in which Comey’s attorneys said they were at a disadvantage because they’d not been able to review materials gathered years ago. Comey is charged with lying to Congress in a case filed after President Donald Trump appeared to urge his attorney general to prosecute him. Comey has pleaded not guilty.

Trump may become the face of economic discontent, a year after such worries helped him win big
SUMMARY: Voters have sent a message to President Donald Trump that the economy doesn't feel as though its booming — despite what he says. Democrats romped to victory in Tuesday's key races, focusing on issues like the cost of living. Democrats won the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia and an important ballot initiative in California. Many voters expressed dissatisfaction with the Republican president's handling of the economy. Inflation remains a significant issue. The election suggests Trump's focus on other issues, including immigration and crime, hasn't resonated with voters. Instead, a year after big wins, Trump and the GOP may find themselves the new face of economic discontent.

Supreme Court weighing Trump tariffs in a trillion-dollar test of executive power
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s power to unilaterally impose far-reaching tariffs is before the Supreme Court in a pivotal test of executive power with trillion-dollar implications for the global economy. The challengers say Trump is illegally using an emergency law to claim nearly limitless tariff power and American small businesses are paying the price. Trump's administration says the law gives the president the power to regulate importation, including tariffs. The Republican president has called the case before the court Wednesday one of the most important in the country’s history and says a ruling against him would be catastrophic for the economy.

How key demographic groups voted in 2025, according to the AP Voter Poll
SUMMARY: There were signs in the AP Voter Poll that there’s plenty of room for Democrats to make up ground among groups that moved toward President Donald Trump in last year’s election. The sweeping survey of more than 17,000 voters in New Jersey, Virginia, California and New York City that explains who voted in each election and their views on the top issues in their state. But even with major wins, the survey also exposed fault lines for Democrats. Young men were less likely than young women to support Democrats in the governor’s races, and Jewish voters in New York City appeared wary of supporting Democratic nominee, Zohran Mamdani.

California voters approve new US House map to boost Democrats in 2026
SUMMARY: California voters have approved a plan to overhaul the state’s congressional district boundaries, giving Democrats a boost in their bid to win the U.S. House majority next year. The approval of Proposition 50 could allow Democrats to gain up to five additional seats in the 2026 midterms, when they hope to gain the power to block President Donald Trump’s agenda in Congress. The measure was pushed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in response to a Republican-led redistricting effort in Texas. Democrats dominate as economic woes take a toll on Trump's GOP. Takeaways from Election Day 2025
SUMMARY: Democrats are dominating the first major Election Day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House. A debate about the future of the Democratic Party may have only just begun, but there are signs that the economy — specifically, Trump’s inability to deliver the economic turnaround he promised last fall — may hurt the Republican Party for the foreseeable future. Democrats won governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey, the only states electing new chief executives this year. Trump was largely absent from the campaign trail, but the GOP candidates closely aligned themselves with the president. They bet that his big win last year could provide a path to victory this time.

SUMMARY: France’s government has started a procedure to suspend access to online retail giant Shein until the company proves that its content conforms with French law. The decision, announced in a statement by the Finance Ministry, came after controversy over sex dolls with childlike features were found listed for sale on Shein’s website. The move came on the same day that Shein opened its first permanent store in Paris inside one of the city’s most iconic department stores. On Wednesday morning protesters camped outside the BHV department store, but crowds of shoppers turned out undeterred. Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

All of the top six came from either the Big Ten or Southeastern Conference — a dose of business as usual despite a season that has been anything but predictable.
