Shooting at a historically Black university's homecoming fest in Pennsylvania kills 1 and wounds 6
SUMMARY: Authorities say gunfire erupted during outdoor festivities at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University, killing one person and wounding six others. The shooting took place late Saturday as students and alumni celebrated homecoming at the historically Black university, about an hour's drive southwest of Philadelphia. Authorities say it was a chaotic scene as people fled in all directions. The Chester County district attorney says one person who had a firearm was detained. He says officials are investigating the possibility that there was more than one shooter but don't believe there's any active threat to the campus. Authorities aren't sharing details about the victims.

Video shows dramatic rescue of baby pinned under overturned car in Texas
SUMMARY: Authorities in Texas say a baby is expected to make a full recovery after it was pulled from under a vehicle that had flipped during a crash. Body camera footage released by the Fort Worth Police Department shows an officer running toward the overturned car Thursday morning. Both the mother and child had been ejected. The officer rallied bystanders at the scene to lift the car just enough to pull the 1-year-old to safety. The child was unresponsive at first, but resuscitation efforts paid off and the child eventually began to cry. Police said both the mother and child were expected to make a full recovery.

Former LAPD officer charged with murder in 2015 shooting of unarmed homeless man
SUMMARY: The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office says a grand jury indictment was unsealed charging a former Los Angeles police officer in the 2015 shooting death of an unarmed homeless man. Clifford Proctor pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder on Friday. Brendan Glenn was killed during a struggle with officers outside a bar. His name became a rallying cry against police shootings in Los Angeles. The indictment comes after the previous district attorney reexamined four use-of-force cases involving police. Current District Attorney Nathan Hochman will decide whether to continue with the case. A previous district attorney in 2018 had declined to charge Proctor.

Anti-abortion pregnancy centers are looking to offer much more than ultrasounds and diapers
SUMMARY: More anti-abortion pregnancy centers have been offering medical services such as testing for sexually transmitted infections. With coming changes to Medicaid, more women are expected to be uninsured or lack access to clinics. And more could seek care from the organizations, which generally provide free services and don't bill insurance. In some states, they get taxpayer dollars. Critics of the centers say they lack accountability, don't provide birth control and offering only limited ultrasounds that can't be used for diagnosing fetal anomalies. One battle over the centers is heading to the Supreme Court in coming months.

New Jersey officer stopped at ATM and pizzeria instead of investigating double-murder
SUMMARY: A New Jersey officer has been charged with misconduct after prosecutors say he didn’t quickly respond to and properly investigate reports of a shooting that turned out to be a double murder. Prosecutors say Franklin Township Police Sergeant Kevin Bollaro had been the on-duty officer on the evening of Aug. 1, when police received 911 calls reporting gunshots and screaming in Pittstown. But rather than responding immediately, prosecutors say he drove to an ATM. They also say during the time he claimed to be investigating the shooting, the officer was already on route to a pizzeria.

Judge rules immigration detention of Chicago man with daughter battling cancer is illegal
SUMMARY: A federal judge has ruled that the detention of a Chicago man by immigration authorities is illegal. Ruben Torres Maldonado, whose 16-year-old daughter has a rare and advanced form of cancer, must get a bond hearing by Oct. 31. Torres was detained Oct. 18, and his attorneys are seeking his release. The judge said Friday the detention violates due process rights. But he said he couldn't order an immediate release. Torres' attorney sees this ruling as a win. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security alleges Torres has been living illegally in the U.S. for years. His daughter's treatment was interrupted because of the stress of his arrest.

Kamala Harris leaves door open for 2028 presidential run
SUMMARY: Kamala Harris isn’t ruling out another run for the White House. Harris was asked about the possibility in an interview with the BBC posted online Saturday. She said she expects a woman will be president in the coming years, and it could possibly be her. The former vice president said she's “not done” but hasn’t decided whether to run in 2028. She dismissed the suggestion that she’d face long odds. Harris replaced then-President Joe Biden as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee after he dropped out of the race. She ultimately lost to Republican President Donald Trump.

The East Wing of the White House is gone. Here's a look at some of the history made there
SUMMARY: Betty Ford reportedly said that if the White House West Wing is the “mind” of the nation, then the East Wing is the “heart.” That “heart” beat for more than 100 years until this past week, when President Donald Trump had the East Wing torn down to build a ballroom. First ladies and their teams have worked from their East Wing offices on everything from anti-drug and literacy campaigns to beautification and preservation programs. The Trump White House says it will rebuild a more modern East Wing. Some of those who worked there have mixed opinions about the demolition.

Trump's redistricting push hits roadblocks in Indiana and Kansas as Republican lawmakers resist
SUMMARY: Republicans in Indiana and Kansas are resisting pressure from President Donald Trump to redraw congressional districts. Despite the White House push, Republicans in those Midwestern states say they lack the votes to pass new GOP-friendly maps. This resistance is a rare setback for the Republican president as he aims to cement control of the House in the 2026 elections. Indiana's state Senate leader says the chamber doesn't have enough support to redistrict. In Kansas, Republican leaders are struggling to overcome the Democratic governor's opposition to mid-decade redistricting. The pushback reflects a broader debate over fairness and political strategy.

Trump threatens Canada with 10% extra import tax for not pulling down anti-tariffs ad sooner
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10% because of an anti-tariff television ad aired by the province of Ontario. The ad used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, angering Trump who said he would end trade talks with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pull the ad after the weekend, and it ran during the first game of the World Series. Trump said on Saturday he should have pulled it sooner. Rubio says mediators of Gaza ceasefire shared information to uncover a recent threat
SUMMARY: Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Israel, the U.S. and the other mediators of the Gaza ceasefire deal are sharing information to disrupt any threats and that allowed them to identify a possible impending attack last weekend. Speaking to reporters Saturday en route from Israel to Qatar, Rubio says the State Department put out a message, sent the warning to other mediators and the attack didn't happen. He says the goal is to find threats before anything happens. Rubio also noted that next week the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, is expected in Israel. Shutdowns began as a way to enforce federal law. Now Trump is using it to take more power
SUMMARY: The government shutdown is quickly becoming a way for President Donald Trump to exercise new command over the government. Yet it wasn’t always this way. Shutdowns started as an attempt to tighten Washington’s observance of federal law. The modern phenomena of the U.S. government closing down services was set in motion in 1980 by a series of legal opinions from then-Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti. In the current shutdown, Trump has used the funding lapse to punish Democrats, lay off thousands of federal workers and reconfigure the federal budget for his priorities.

Argentina votes in midterm elections set to test President Milei's mandate and US support
SUMMARY: Argentines will be heading to the polls in high-stakes midterm elections that could help shape libertarian President Javier Milei’s political path — and the future of U.S. financial support for his government. Nearly half the lower house and a third of the Senate are up for grabs in a vote Sunday seen as a referendum on Milei’s past two years in power. While his wealthier supporters credit him with opening up the economy and scrapping red tape, others in working-class neighborhoods have grown frustrated with falling wages and sluggish growth. Polls show a tight race between Milei’s party and the left-leaning populist opposition. The result will move markets and test Milei's fragile mandate.

Russia has tested a new nuclear-capable missile, Putin and top general say
SUMMARY: Russia has tested a new nuclear-capable cruise missile, moving closer to deploying it, according to President Vladimir Putin. The Burevestnik missile, which has been in development for years, reportedly covered 8,700 miles in a key test last Tuesday. Putin claims the missile has an unlimited range and can evade missile defenses. However, many experts are skeptical, citing potential reliability and environmental concerns. The missile reportedly suffered an explosion in 2019, causing fatalities and a brief spike in radioactivity. Putin has directed preparations for deploying these weapons to Russia's armed forces.

Europe fights to avoid being sidelined by Trump’s world-shaping plans
SUMMARY: Donald Trump has seized a central role on the global stage, leaving European allies on the sidelines. European governments have struggled to influence Trump's policies on Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war. Geopolitical risk expert Lindsay Newman says Trump's agenda disproves the idea that "America First" means isolationism. European efforts to bolster U.S. support for Ukraine got a boost this week when Trump imposed sanctions on Russian oil and gas. But Trump continues to express frustration with Kyiv and has not managed to secure a ceasefire. American cardinal celebrates old Latin Mass in St. Peter's in a sign of change
SUMMARY: A top American cardinal has celebrated a traditional Latin Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica with the explicit permission of Pope Leo XIV. Thousands of pilgrims packed the back altar of the basilica to a standing room-only capacity. They are rejoicing after Pope Leo XIV explicitly approved the celebration. Pope Francis had restricted the Latin Mass in 2021, citing division within the church. Traditionalists are hopeful Leo will allow more parishes to offer the traditional liturgy. The latest rounds in the liturgy wars date back to the Second Vatican Council, the 1960s meetings that modernized the church. Among the reforms was the celebration of the Mass in the vernacular, rather than Latin.

Barger’s drive was the first postseason grand slam in Blue Jays history, and the big blow in a nine-run sixth inning that gave Toronto an 11-2 lead over the defending World Series champions.
