Defending champions Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz reach the US Open quarterfinals

NEW YORK (AP) — Defending champions Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz made getting back to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open look easy, even if their paths there felt more difficult than they looked. The top-ranked Sabalenka solved some early struggles to hold serve and overpower Taylor Townsend. Alcaraz also advanced in straight sets, beating Tommy Paul. Next up for Sabalenka is Linda Noskova, who won Wimbledon earlier this year. Frances Tiafoe and Alex Michelsen advanced to guarantee at least one American in the men's semifinals.

Surprise! Alcaraz learns during ESPN interview he was wrong about his next US Open opponent

NEW YORK (AP) — Next up for Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open is ... not who he thought it was. Alcaraz was surprised to learn during an interview on ESPN after his victory Sunday that his quarterfinal match would be against either Ben Shelton or Stefanos Tsitsipas in a match that Shelton later won. The defending champion visited the set after beating Tommy Paul in his fourth-round match. Andy Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, asked Alcaraz about the challenges either player would present. A confused Alcaraz asked him to repeat the question. When Roddick started to ask about Shelton and Tsitsipas, Alcaraz interrupted to say he thought he was playing Frances Tiafoe or Daniil Medvedev.

Empty seats, tired stars: The US Open’s post-2 a.m. finishes spark a pushback

NEW YORK (AP) — Late-night finishes are a hallmark of the U.S. Open. But so many matches going into the early morning hours this year have players wondering how much is too much Grand Slam tennis after midnight. Three going past 2 a.m. in the first week already set a record, including the first time in tournament history play has gone that late on back-to-back days. Venus Williams was subjected to the latest start at the U.S. Open, while men's top-seeded Alexander Zverev had his first two matches end at 1:55 and 2:15 a.m.

Shelton, Tiafoe and Michelsen win at the US Open as American men aim to end a Grand Slam drought

NEW YORK (AP) — Frances Tiafoe and Alex Michelsen will meet in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Ben Shelton is there as well, set to face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The American men are making a real run at ending their lengthy Grand Slam drought. The U.S. hasn’t had a men’s major champion since Andy Roddick won in Flushing Meadows in 2003, and there haven’t even been many great opportunities in the more than two decades since. But backed by the home crowd and in good form, the Americans had five players in the final 16 of a major for the first time since 1995.

A gritty late surge lifts the US past Italy 55-52 in its toughest World Cup test in years

BERLIN (AP) — The United States faced its stiffest challenge in nearly two decades in the women’s FIBA World Cup and escaped with a win over Italy thanks a few timely baskets late and a key defensive play by Chelsea Gray. Jackie Young scored 10 points to lead the struggling offense in the 55-52 win on Sunday. It was the fewest points the Americans had scored in a World Cup win since they beat Australia 42-38 in 1967. The U.S. has won 32 straight World Cup games dating to a loss to Russia in the 2006 semifinals. Only one team had come within single digits of the Americans during this run before Sunday, when Australia lost by eight in 2010.
